Confused on timing

Post by lagwagon21 »

Ok, I am going to just wait until I get this chipped P28 and get it tuned. Does Lowe Performance have everything there to tune it? Anyone know what it costs to have a car tuned?

A tune is not a cure all. If a vehicle is not getting to normal operating temp its going to stay in closed loop and continue to run rich. The ecu has set maps for a vehicles running temp so if it sees that it is cold its going to continue to run in its "warm up stage". Put a tstat in and see what happens

woah now its not geting up to temp a good shop wont even atempt to tune a car that wont warm up and risk damage. change the thermastat and see where you are thats the worst thing you can do to a motor is run the sh*t out of it while its cold

It gets up to temp, it just takes a bit longer. I retarded the timing 2 degrees last night and it accually warmed up faster today than it did yesterday? Still going to put in another t stat. Should I just get a stock usdm t stat, or jdm?

Your Car with a b16a with the jdm p30 is going to run rich we have discussed this, the motor is completely sound on that car. My crx with a chipped pr3 ecu and b16 ran rich and it loved every second of it, your just pondering the worse from your last deal I can personally tell you that car is in perfect running order.

I agree with the others. You need to get a thermostat in there so the ECU gets into closed loop and stays there. I've seen a few Hondas that can get up to temp but they cool off enough when you drive them that they go back into open loop.

Also, I would suggest a wideband (as did Rob) or reading the plugs to make sure that the car is running rich(black is rich, tan is around stoich, white or really clean is lean. Speckles usually means detonation). As crazy as it is, a car running lean smells very similar. I've seen this many times on the dyno.

Ok, so should I just get a stock t stat, or something hotter? I have owned 10 Hondas, and I can't remember any of them warming fast. This car takes the longest of them all, but it does get up to full temp after about 10-15 minutes of normal driving. And it does stay at full temp while I am driving it, I guess? The radiator has never kicked on while driving. Hell I didn't even think it worked until I let the car run for 30 minutes in my garage, then it finally kicked on for about 1 minute.

As for wideband, do you have to buy a kit or just a 4 wire wideband o2?

And Corey, you are right about me over thinking everything because I got so screwed on my last car. I just want to get it tuned so I know I am getting the best out of the motor and not damaging it by running rich or lean. I just need to stop dwelling on the past though.lol

Stock T stat is just fine; you just want to know for sure it's doing its job. A wideband, you need a complete kit. Typically, sensor, gauge, and some sort of box. Most people that tune have a wideband so you don't really NEED one if you plan on getting the car tuned soon.

What t stat do I need to get for the JDM b16a? What car should I get it for? Thanks again!
