Confused on timing

Post by lagwagon21 »

Just another noob question. I see on the crank pulley of my B16a that there are 3 small marks and then a lone white mark. What is that single line for? Also, would retarding it a little help from running rich? What line does what? Right now it is on the middle of the three small lines when I check it. Should I also check the cam timing marks, or is that even neccesary?

Thanks, Chad

The lone white mark is top dead center when that points up the little arrows on the cams should also be pointed up and the cans should be aligned

So, what mark should it be on? Will retarding it make it run richer or leaner?

you cannot adjust timing from your crank/cam setup without making your car run like crap. there is a specific amount of teeth on a timing belt that allow it to fit on correctly. if you are off 1 tooth, your car will have no power. if your car is running rich, look at your fuel system, not your "mechanical" timing.

After the cam timing is set by the timing belt you can adjust your ignition timing by twisting the distributor after jumping the service connector. This wont make your car any richer or leaner because all the gas/air will already be in the compression chamber and compressed before the ignition timing come into play.

To make it richer or leaner you need to change how much fuel/air gets into hte combustion chamber. This is usually done by modifying the ECU.

How do you even know it's running rich? Are you just guessing because you smell fuel?

The PO said it ran rich, I think it is too. Because the car runs cold and it does smell like gas. I should be getting a chipped p28 soon. I'll have it tuned.

You need to check that with a wideband O2 to confirm that it's running rich. Most of the time with swapped cars, people will delete the Charcoal Canister and just leave the vent line open in the engine bay. That will vent fuel fumes into the engine bay and could be what you're smelling. If it's running colder then normal, another thing to check would be the thermostat. I'd hate to see you waste a bunch of time and money or risk damaging your car when it could be something simple that was overlooked.
