b18b piston/rod question
I'm building a b18b1 for turbo. My original plan was to go with some wiseco pistons with eagle rods/arp rod bolts but my further research on it has shown that my stock ls rods are capable of handling 450-500hp range just fine. so my question is, would it be ok to just go with the lower compression wiseco's, leave my stock rods in, and just throw some arp rod bolts on em? with arp head studs too of course. I also dont plan on sleeving my block.

If your going to do pistons, please save up a little more and just throw some rods it in. You'll thank me later.

lets see here...the crank can probly hold up to 450-500hp...as for as the rods i really wouldn't trust them over 350-400hp...it's not so much as the rods u need to be worried about it's the rod bolts...those things r flippin slim...if u just slapped on a boost system, arp rod bolts, arp head studs, port polished head, injectors and a good tune...i can easily see 13-12 sec passes on the 1/4 mile...stock hp in those i'd have to say 135-140hp after that lil list u can probly expect about 220-250hp...at that point u'll have traction issues on street tires so some street slicks would probly be nice...if u'd like talk to boosted da about a chipped ecu and tune! o p.s. i would def invest in a block gaurd also...probly lookin at another 80-120 bux

i know someone that has a 11 sec daily driver ls-swap eg hatch. the only upgrade to the bottom end was rod bolts. 17lbs boost for 4 1/2 years. i've seen him at gateway international doing 12.00 and 11.8
my best friend down in south fl just recently piece together a gsr, stock except rod bolts, gt35r 17lbs 420whp.

Nah, you'd be surprised what happens when you build and tune a engine correctly.MaSSaCrE;247401 wrote:Must be baby'n the hell out of it and tuned pretty well

thanks for the info! im more leaning towards getting the rods along with the pistons now just so im not kickin myself in the ass later over it. as far as a block gaurd ive done some research on it because my original plan was to use one and ive found too many 50/50 responses on it. how it has to be installed perfectly or it will warp my cylinder heads. so im not gonna be running the block gaurd on my setup either. ive already got some arp rod bolts in the mail too :biggrin:AznRacer89;247378 wrote:lets see here...the crank can probly hold up to 450-500hp...as for as the rods i really wouldn't trust them over 350-400hp...it's not so much as the rods u need to be worried about it's the rod bolts...those things r flippin slim...if u just slapped on a boost system, arp rod bolts, arp head studs, port polished head, injectors and a good tune...i can easily see 13-12 sec passes on the 1/4 mile...stock hp in those i'd have to say 135-140hp after that lil list u can probly expect about 220-250hp...at that point u'll have traction issues on street tires so some street slicks would probly be nice...if u'd like talk to boosted da about a chipped ecu and tune! o p.s. i would def invest in a block gaurd also...probly lookin at another 80-120 bux

Yes built hondas can get crazy but he said stock other then some rod bolts. I have personally seen that much out of stock honda motors but they didnt last years. Maybe a couple months max at that much psi daily driven.Phate;247402 wrote:Nah, you'd be surprised what happens when you build and tune a engine correctly.
Now if its 17psi for racing and dd on 6-10psi ive seen them last very long being bone stock

Head studs are the only thing I would suggest. It is the only internal part I have changed out.
I have been on 15-17psi for about 4 years before the motor ate a couple rod bearings. This motor was on the vafc hack for a while too (no timing correction). All on a self tune.
I don't know if the poster was referring to me, but I did not really baby the car, but I didn't drive it hard without reason.
There are plenty of other stock ls motors that have run 10-11 second range....although usually in a light chassis as well.
