Turboing my EK hatch

Post by crxbrad »

I have a 97 civic hatch and am planning on a turbo.
It has a d16Y7 in it right now that runs great. I bought a d16Y8 for it.
I also bought a junkyard turbo. The turbo is an IHI VJ11 9105
I believe it's from an old Ford Probe turbo.
It was doin fine set up in a crx w/a Y7. Previous owner wanted to go w/a larger turbo so I got this thing.
Now...the d16Y8 I bought was in a hatch like mine that someone had built and turboed.
It has forged pistons and rods. But I am not sure of the brand.
Story is, the person who had it in their car blew a head gasket for whatever reason. Probly too much boost/no controller/full boost...?
Anyway, the guy took it apart to put a new gasket on it and I guess was gonna check everything out before putting it all back together...
So, the engine is disassembled right now. The rods and pistons are not in the block and the head is off the block.
I'm guessing I should have the block checked out by a machine shop to make sure it's even worth messing with...?
Another question I would have is should I get a head gasket that's made for a turboed application? I've seen em on ebay for like $120/copper head gasket for turboed application.
Any other suggestion would be nice.
Thanks

oem/felpro gasket is the best gasket to use even on high hp engines.

yeah check the head for square and use the arp's. depending on how much boost he was running he could of had head lift (common on boosted diesel motors) and blown the gasket.
turbo lag psh? boost is only a down shift away

Well, I dropped the block off at the machine shop today. He's gonna clean it up, polish the crank, and hone the cylinder walls(just to clean it up a bit).
So, he will be able to tell me what size rings and rod bearings to get.
Then, I can get all new gaskets and stuff.
Then, get some odds and ends I need to put it back together.

I'm wanting to put the Y8 head on my Y7 for now. I'm figuring I need a P2E since I don't really wanna mess w/doing obd2-obd1. But I'll need info on all I need to do.
Thanks
