Valve stem seal replacement

Hello, I plan on doing a Valve Stem seal replacement, and a basic 90k miles tune up on the teggy b18c1 here, which includes timing belt, water pump, lash adjustment, and a few other seals. I'm burning some oil and I'm pretty sure the valve steam seals are bad, I still have to do a compression test, but if the gaskets need replacing I'll be doing that as well.

I've been reading this article, and everything seems pretty straight forward.

Except the part where he puts the compressor in cylinder 1. can anyone tell me why he does this? Will I need to switch to cylinder 2 when I hit those seals?

Im pretty sure hes putting the pressure in there to hold the valves closed. I did this with the head off.

alright thanks, thats what I was thinking, he didn't really explain though. Looks like a fun project awaits me. If the headgasket is bad I'll be doing this while its off, guess the compression test will tell me this.

Well headgaskets are like 50-60$, and that would be a lot more labor involved to get the head off. If you really wanted to though, its not like itll hurt.
