Y8 Head Install

Post by jsanders »

Today I picked up a virgin auto p28 ECU that I plan on chipping and converting to a manual ECU. Because I want to replace my Y7 head with a Y8 head and upgrade to OBD1. I have been reading up on other Honda forums about the process needed for swapping over the Y8 head. But I still have a few questions that I really just can't clear up for myself. By the way this is my first Honda, so please treat me like a noob haha.

So when I swap over the Y8 head, I know I'm going to need to wire up the VTEC Solenoid. And I hear that is only a two wire deal? Would it be easier for me to run the two wires myself in the harness. Or should I start looking for a EX wiring harness to install.

Also I read something about having to wire a IAC, and a Knock Sensor? What else would need to be wired up to get all this working properly?

After I remove the rp17 and add the rp18 on the P28 to make it a manual. And I get the OBD2 to OBD1 adapter harness. Would I be able to use the P28 with this configuration? Or am I going to need to get it chipped and tuned to run this? I really don't want to use 96-98 EX ECU since I do want to tune down the road.

I know this is a ton of noob questions that has been answered time after time on this site, and other Honda sites. But I simply cannot find the info I need amongst all of the info out there. I have been trying to read up and research for a few days now. So I appreciate all the help any of you give me.

Thanks.

convert it to manual use a obd2 to obd1 conversion harness and your good to go , you wont have to worry about the knock sensor with the p28, you will need to run vtec wires if you dont use a ex harness and as far as the iacv you'll just need to get a two wire plug for the y8 iacv and then match the colors from the 3 wire iacv plug.

now to get the car to pass emissions you will have to revert the car back to stock 100% otherwise youll never get the car to pass a obd2 scan.... unless you licence the car out of st louis county/city
