D-series mini me questions...

Post by 99BlackHatch »

I'm not looking to do one, but I was curious ever since I saw a heated conversation about it a while back.

So for information purposes...

What is better on a D16Y7 block? A Z6 head or a Y8 head?

This is for informatin purposes, not to start another heated convo.

depends on what future plans are. for lower compression go with a Y8, since the z6 has a taller deck. I have always favored Y8 just because of the simplicity of the swap on a y7.

without going into to much detail, think of it this way y8 low to mid range, z6 top end. the y8 will yield a higher c/r because it has square combustion chambers while the z6's c/r will be lower however, the difference would probably be indistinguishable in an N/A build. i would use a y7 head on a y7 and just buy a nice cam...

When using the D16Z6 head on a D16Y7 block, the compression ratio doesn't change (9.62:1) at all because both heads have the same size combustion chambers. The only difference would be the added feature of VTEC, which we all know doesn't do shit in a single cam since it only engages on the intake side due to the rocker assembly.

Using the D16Y8 head will bump your compression up to 9.96:1 due to smaller combustion chambers. But, as mentioned before by stolle, the difference is not noticeable.

And to answer the topic question...IMO, I would use the D16Y8 head when doing a mini-me on a D16Y7 block due to the fact that it does bump the C/R up slightly and I'd rather stick with the same OBD generation D-Series parts. But, I agree with stolle. The cost for the gain isn't really worth it. Sticking with the D16Y7 head and using the money elsewhere would net the better overall gain for the car.

I understand both sides... And as mentioned, I'm not looking to do this... but I will admit, the Y7 could use a lil' more "pep" though. lol

If I really wanted pep and was willing to drop a lil' bit of money on the power for the khaki car, i'd throw in a "B", but I'd figured I'd learn a bit more about "D"

There are multiple threads on this subject.

i favor anything z6. i hate everything y8. i have had about 20 bad y8 blocks come through my shop. as far as the head, its has that silly ass timing. no reason to use a y8 over a z6 if the z6 is available.

See, this is what I was looking for... Someone to challenge the Y8 head.

And EXACTLY, why do YOU, mike, prefer the Z6

well if youre going to be using the p2p ecu then just use the y8 head. or if youll be using a p28 then z6 all the way. give me a reason why you wouldnt use a z6 head.......with the y8 head it depends, it has silly ass timing and "they" all say the z6 head flows better. now i cant think of one bad thing about z6 anything so that is what i prefer. yea the y8 head has a better quench area but fuck that, i hate y8's.
