how to tell if a motor is vtec

Post by sn95guy »

ok i have a d15 motor swapped civic, the guy told me it came out of a del sol or something but he didnt know cus he bought it like it was. he said the car used to get raced before he got it. well i put a gauge cluster in it with a tach and at 4k it starts to pull hard at normal throttle. under heavy throttle it does also but not every time. i have a check engine light and havent ran it yet. also i have a auto computer in the car if that makes a difference. it cuts out when going into 3rd gear mostly and soem times just under normal driving will bog down and die unless i rev it up then it goes fine... anyone?

Well I can answer the vtec ??..
If it was minime swapped or it says d15b with no number after the b then it is. Most likely it's not but if you look on the passenger side of the valve cover you'll see a wire with a "green" plug if it is.

ya pretty sure it doesnt have that, i think it says b7 on it, but do they all pull and get real loud when they hit 4k? my girlfriend has a 93 civic lx 4door with the same engine code but a auto. it doesnt pull or sound like my car.. could it be the intake and full exhuast that makes it do it?

can barely tell in my mom's 99 ex auto, unless you take the intake hose off, lol. if its the d15b7 then it came out of the del sol s (aka lowest trim lvl) and isnt vtak

If you really want vtec you do a head swap. Google mini-me swap, and it should have the information.

B18 is not hard in a sol since you can buy OE B series mounts and shift linkage.

there are quite a few write-ups on it, let me see if I can dig one up.
