H23 knocking?

Post by justme5424 »

Alright here's the situation. Just got my prelude towed to the shop to get the timing belt and water pump changed and to get the valve lash set. Ok... right? WRONG! The shop calls me today and said that the motor was knocking in the fourth cylinder. I know that when before I took it in, the valve lash was not set in cylinder four and the timing belt was cracking bad. They said they got it running but it was knocking and the timing belt was in good shape. Got the keys back and went by there to look at it (after hours) and they DID NOT DO ANYTHING!!! They didn't set the valve lash like I had asked and they started the motor! The valves were not set on the exhaust side. Which leads me to believe that they bent my valves. They told me the compression test came back as Cyl1 140, Cyl2 140, Cyl3 140, Cyl4 60. They guy I bought the car from told me there was no knocking before I bought the car. So basically I'm asking... If the valves were not set...would that lead to a knock? What do you think I should do about the shop doing that? In a tough spot. I haven't started the car since I bought it, it's been towed everywhere. Please help me out guys.

H23 knocking?

Sorry you post is a bit confusing.

You bought this prelude and never heard it run. Improper valve lash would cause a clatter not a knocking noise. Id talk to the person you bought it from.
You will need either a new eninge. Or you could put over size bearings in it and hone the rod/ regrind crank on the bad cylinder. With those compression numbers it leads me to believe that its more time for a rebuild. :-(
