ef's make great first time autocross cars. and if you have nover done it before make sure you like it first, the crx would make a great first time car, and work good in a beginner class. there is a littls red ef hatch that rules the corners and the power plant is stock he just has the combo i recomended suspension and tires/wheels.

- jrsc on non vtec motors = yes
- jrsc on miata's = hell yes
- jrsc on vtec bseries = not a chance

but thats based of of what i have read and talked to alot of people about, basically for autocross you want ALOT of tq.

So if it was me building a autoX car i would FIRST see what classes allow what mods because motor swaps move you into the BIG classes and which also mean money classes. Once you have your class picked out THEN and ONLY then would i worry about mods and motors.

chris

i do agree with chris on this one. all motor will work fine trust me. you don't even need to worry about domination till you get good and that takes time, so take a stock ef with some suspinsion and tires and go have fun!

so i think what will work best is a bone stock car that we all use for a while and then when the engine goes out we will swap in a bigger one. So what would be the cheapest thing to start with that still has some power. Preferably something with at least 130hp.

power is not the key to a great autocross car, you'll be fine with a stock d-series. I would worry more about suspension setups and driving skills

i beg do differ, midorimiller has alot of suspention mods on his 96 civic CX hatch, but with the D16Y7, he cant accelerate worth a shit on the course. He ran the STS class and a stock GEO ran better times.

so check our SCCA's website and get the qualifications sheet and build a car within what ever class you wanna compete in. with a motor swap you would be running in the SM class, but really there aren't that many cars in that class anyways.

A stock GEO is very lightweight. It probably had a more experienced driver, too.

But that is the real key here... DRIVING EXPERIENCE. Ask any regular autocrosser, and they will tell you that the best way to improve your times is to autocross more. To go fast and have fun, you don't need turbos, engine swaps, race tires, strut tower braces, etc. Just get a stock car that is in excellent mechanical condition, and go autocross with it. Once you learn how to drive under control, then start getting into modifications.

when i say cheap i mean under 1000 and i need a running stock car for that.
im thinking

CRX
Older Civic Hatch
Neon
Geo Storm(1.8 DOHC)
Toyota Celica
Toyota MR2
Dodge Shadow (V6)

Any other ideas on stock cars under 1000 that are fun to drive.
Also might be used for rally cross because my friend needs a new
car for next season and he runs in stock class so no more ideas of
swaps at least not right now.
