if this is the 89 hatch that your screenname suggests... you have 8 (thats e.i.g.h.t.) days until your car is exempt from emissions forever... who cares? pay the late fee and register next month.

but... I passed after:
an oil change
a trip around the highways (170->70->270->emissions place on Deilman)
and running a full bottle of fuel system cleaner in ~2gallons of gas when i took the test.

starting september 1st, all vehicle made BEFORE 1996 will be emissions exempt. so, no obd2, no emissions.
they are decentralizing the emissions program, and the obd2 cars can be tested at local shops when they get safety done. since older cars have to run on the 'rollers' they are going to be exempt from testing.

well... if you aren't renewing, and you are just registering the car for the first time in the state, there probably won't be a late fee.
