Coilpack or Ignition Module (EF)???

Post by HiroshimaScreamer »

We have an '89 model 160i SOHC EF that has come up with a bit of an issue as of late. Intermitently, the car would not start after long drives and would need to park for 20min or so and then there would be no problem. Last week, while idling at a set of lights, the car cut off & would not start for the next 15min. Took it home and the following morning still had no luck starting the car. I thought that it might be the alarm or immobiliser causing the issue of not getting any spark, so I towed it in to a fitment centre and all was checked and came back "OK". I've now towed it back home and can only come to the conclusion that either the coilpack or ignition module have given up....
My question is:
What would be more likely the case here, the coilpack or the ignition module?

Thanks

Ok, checked the main relay and all was good. Didn't know which item to attack first, so I went and got both parts, swapped them out and put everything back together.
The car starts up first time again and has no problem with starting directly after running for a while.
Picked the parts up aftermarket tho, cos the agents were more than 3x heavier on price.
