Got some questions about a car i am looking at

Post by jtonot2fast »

I am looking at buying an 89 civic hatch 5 speed to drive back and forth to Ranken Tech School and just curious as what i should pay attention when looking at the car because this is basiclly the first honda that i am serious about buying. And like all other cars each car has some sort of tech prob that makes it unique any pointers from some guys that know what there talking about would be nice thanks for all yalls help and hope to buy my first honda soon.

check the rocker panels right infront of the rear wheels.... for EF hatches this can be a bigger problem area for rust than the rear quarter panels. otherwise, being that old I would expect the suspension and shifting to be a little mushy.
what trim level is it: Si, DX, Standard?

standards are slow... like even for hondas. oh, and that wonderful 4spd transmission. mechanically they aren't really prone to many issues (thats why you see so many on the road with 200,000+ miles on them) but every once in a while you get one that some dumb bastard has spent years railing on and pounding into the dirt. but for d-series motors parts are cheap and junkyards are friendly.

at $950 you probably found a decent deal depending on rust and condition.... if you dont buy it I might be interested in making a project car out of it. I have had 6 88-91 hatches/CRXs and have been thinking about picking up another one. I have crossed 200k in one, and had over 220k (one with over 250k) in a few

Ask about the timing belt and other maintenance...see when it was all done if he knows...best bet is to replace the timing belt anyways and change all the fluids
