slotted dizzy

Post by stlsupra »

i'm running out of options. no matter how i set the adjustable cam gear the distributor timing just wont set right. I'm thinking the timing is retarded as the timing light the red mark is about 12 oclock on the crank gear if that makes any kind of sense.

so who out there has slotted the dizzy? is that my only option?

sounds to me you need to start fresh, put the car to tdc then check your time on the cam and crank pulley make sure it's zero'd out then pull the dist cap and find out which way the rotor bug is pointing if the slot is down it needs to go up pointing tdc with the cams.

Thats how I retimed my old a6.

youre off a tooth or two on the timing belt... you didnt notice it running like shit??

do you know what youre doing? why are you even messing with a adjustable cam gear? are you doing it on a dyno or are you using it with a degree wheel to degree your cam and zero it out because of milling and decking of the head and/or block?

I've checked the cam timing a billion times, i've checked the crank timing just as much. everything lines up. I've bought the block and the head from two different people and have no idea if either were shaved. however with the current timing issue its certainly looking like it is. I bought the adjustable cam gear with the hopes that it would help offset the distributer timing and to help save a couple ounces of rotating mass. I've adjusted the cam timing both ways and the timing comes closest to the 16 degree mark when the cam gear is set to +.5 marks (total of 1 degree) so thats where i'll leave it. At this point the timing is still off (i can't say by how many degrees as i have a cheap timing light). I'm guessing at this point i have no other choice but to slot the bolt holes.

after adjusting the bolt holes in the distrib, timing all checks out. The car has its 'pep' back.

Its officially survived two track days.
