I know i have argued with you about this before, and i still fail to see how a T4 with a larger inlet/outlet and A/R would not flow more cfm than a much smaller turbo at the same pressure... it doesn't claculate :dunno:rickles8099;61913 wrote:turbo size does not matter. its the amount of cfms youre flowing. ive told people this over and over again, but no one listens. 10psi on a t4 is the same thing on the exact same motor/setup(chargepiping, throttle body, intake manifold, etc) as 10psi on a rhb5 as 10psi on a 16g. except on the bigger turbos, you will have more turbo lag and the person with the smaller turbo will get you off the line while youre building boost. so if you want to really get picky, you can be faster on a smaller turbo with the same amount of boost.

turbo'n my car!!
I was running a stock B16 with 9 psi and putting down 235 whp and 175 ft/lbs. Sadly, yet happily, I'm not running that setup anymore.
When the motor went, I didn't look at it like "...Well this sucks." I looked at it like... "TIME TO UPGRADE!"
Now I'm going to be running a B18C1 block with a B16A head, which lowered the compression from 10.4 on the all stock B16A setup to a 9.86 compression ratio. I'll also be running 14 psi.

because you fail to see that point that the inlet/outlet doesnt matter when you chargpiping can hold only so much cfm. 10 psi on a 1 inch diameter pipe is less cfm than 10 psi on a 3 inch diameter pipe. you can argue all you want and physics will always win.budget_crx;61917 wrote:I know i have argued with you about this before, and i still fail to see how a T4 with a larger inlet/outlet and A/R would not flow more cfm than a much smaller turbo at the same pressure... it doesn't claculate :dunno:

and yet besides some OEM cars (capri turbo comes to mind) I have never seen a car with such restrictive chargepiping that it would not benefit from a bigger compressor...rickles8099;61926 wrote:because you fail to see that point that the inlet/outlet doesnt matter when you chargpiping can hold only so much cfm. 10 psi on a 1 inch diameter pipe is less cfm than 10 psi on a 3 inch diameter pipe. you can argue all you want and physics will always win.

This thread has potential... as for breathing in / intake piping... Wouldn't it kind of go hand in hand with breathing out / exhaust?
People do put down better number on turbo'd hondas, for example, using 3" exhaust over 2.5" exhaust... More flow, better flow and faster flow, will equal more power... correct?

Isn't there another difference that a larger turbo at the same psi as a smaller turbo forces cooler air? And when you put a larger turbo on it builds more power up top then through the mid range and into the higher ranges like a smaller turbo?budget_crx;61917 wrote:I know i have argued with you about this before, and i still fail to see how a T4 with a larger inlet/outlet and A/R would not flow more cfm than a much smaller turbo at the same pressure... it doesn't claculate :dunno:
Also when having a smaller turbo on and going to a larger doesn't it take more flow to spool the larger turbo then the smaller one?
Remember these are just question's. I think Jake has answered them before for me but I can't quite remember.

Well, after getting a headache after reading all that tech nonsense, ( rick wins ) i remembered what I was gonna say. im interested in that motor if youd ever need to sell it.

i thought you were smart enough to know that that was an example :embarass: so take out the 1 inch diameter and put 2 inch diameter in. i know there are stock cars out there with 2 inch chargepiping. it still means the same thing, 2 inch diameter piping will still flow less cfm as 3 inch would. and 3 inch diameter piping flows less than 4 inch diameter piping.budget_crx;61927 wrote:and yet besides some OEM cars (capri turbo comes to mind) I have never seen a car with such restrictive chargepiping that it would not benefit from a bigger compressor...
the gains are so minimal that generating boost sooner earlier will make up the difference in the gains in hp. (talking about a 1/4 race because if youre talking about running all out for 5 minutes straight, the bigger turbo will spin a a lower rpm and thus make less friction. and we all know that friction creates heat and heat will make the air less dense which in return means less oxygen to the combustion chamber which equals less power which finally means not as fast. which all equates to bigger turbo=more power)90CivicEx;61931 wrote:Isn't there another difference that a larger turbo at the same psi as a smaller turbo forces cooler air?
bigger turbos have more potential to create bigger hp gains due to being able to move more cfms. but if you have the same chargepiping with a small turbo as with a bigger turbo, you will move the same amount of cfm with the same amount of boost. if you were to up the size of the chargepiping when going to a bigger turbo, you will make more hp.90CivicEx;61931 wrote:And when you put a larger turbo on it builds more power up top then through the mid range and into the higher ranges like a smaller turbo?
this is generally referred to as boost lag90CivicEx;61931 wrote:Also when having a smaller turbo on and going to a larger doesn't it take more flow to spool the larger turbo then the smaller one?

ive debated the same with a teacher i had in tech school. we came to the agreement that 10 psi = 10 psi. all in all, if you wanted to run a smaller turbo, use smaller chargepipes, bigger turbo = bigger charge pipes. no matter what we recommend here, it has already been done. we are not going to discover anything new. so i would basically copycat off of someone elses setup that is proven and meets the goals you have set for your car. it sounds like a half ass answer, but if you can fund a revelutionary(sp?) turbo setup that is going sink everyones battleship, then i would just copy.
