The car has been in an accident and has a 261K mi D16y7.
I was wondering what is the availibility of these cars in local junkyards? I need the following:
Drivers side front fender
Front bumper cover
grill
Radiator support
hood
Head lights
Certifit prices all of this around 330$
////////////////////////////////
I was wondering what are my options for a motor swap? This will be a daily so I am not looking for HP. The most important thing is that the swap is cheap and easy.
D16y8? What is involved in swapping a VTEC motor into a non-vtec car?
How much am I looking at spending on parts?

The only junkyard that I know of locally that has an EK is Speedway and its pretty much fucked. Your better off getting Certifit parts. Normally I would suggest OEM body panels, but the car your talking about is pretty messed up and I doubt that the panels will line up right anyways. The chances of finding a D16Y8 in the St. Louis area are slim to none, just ask JVolosh. You could do a head swap. IIRC, you would need the complete head, VTEC solenoid, valve cover w/bolts and new gasket, distributor, spark plugs and wires, head gasket, timing belt, and head studs. I'd say that your better passing on that car due to high milage, the car being wrecked, and the car doesn't even start up now. Either way, good luck and I hope I was able to help.

last I heard the car was running just fine, he told me that the car was running and driving with "no hiccups". I doubt I will swap the motor unless it goes out, I might rebuild it though. I checked the KBB on the the car in fair condition it's 3100 with all those miles so I think I am going to take care of all the body work and drive it while I need it then ask 1200 for it just to cover my costs.
What short blocks will a y7 head bolt on?
Thanks for the help by the way:icon_biggrin:

Yeah, I just looked at the thread and saw it was running again. The Y7 head should bolt up to any 88-00 SOHC D-Series non-VTEC block without any problems.Dusted;32529 wrote:last I heard the car was running just fine, he told me that the car was running and driving with "no hiccups". Another thing I forgot is you would need the ECU out of the car with the D16Y8 (I don't know the ECU codes for OBD2 vehicles) and the VTEC oil pressure and VTEC spool plugs for the VTEC solenoid and some 16 gauge wire to wire the into the ECU or you can half ass it and wire it into a VTEC controller (i.e. V-AFC) and call it a day.

the correct ecu for that swap would be a p2p if you do a d16y8 head.
I used a chipped p28 with no problems for my y8 head swap..
BUT, car that the y8 headswap was an obd1 car...
I would also go with all of the parts from certifit...
I will also give you another spare y7 head if you want it ... dunno what you would need it for tho..SilverStreak;32532 wrote:Yeah, I just looked at the thread and saw it was running again. The Y7 head should bolt up to any 88-00 SOHC D-Series non-VTEC block without any problems.

he would have to convert the car from obd2 to obd1 to use a p28 ecu. wether he runs a z6 head or y8 head the engine management is still obd2 and requires an obd2 ecu.destructn;32638 wrote:the correct ecu for that swap would be a P28 if you do a d16z6 head.

I'm sorry i keep thinking the car is older than it is.. which is bad because it is my car... I do have an obd2-> obd1 conversion harness at our shop that we have used.. but you are correct.. thank yourickles8099;32644 wrote:he would have to convert the car from obd2 to obd1 to use a p28 ecu. wether he runs a z6 head or y8 head the engine management is still obd2 and requires an obd2 ecu.
