right hand drive legality issues?

Post by Boosted_da »

ok so i have never done a right hand drive conversion but have been thinking about doing it tho. so that leaves me with the question. where does jonny law come in on this. i have been told that you have to go and get your car inspected by the state highway patol or some shit like that so they can sign off on it. i honestly have no idea this is true or what would be involved if anything for that fact.

I don't see why you would. unless the shop that does your safety inspection gives you trouble over it.

I think you only need to have them inspected if it is an imported RHD... Otherwsie if you do the swap yourself / shop swaps it, then it should be ok since it still has your VIN numbers from your original car.

BudgetCRX / Jake knows a lot about all this info... and one of the only guys on here with a RHD car.
I'm still a neighborhood ASSHOLE!

The VIN on the RHD dash will not match. I do believe its just like doing an Interior swap. You have to show them the paperwork and they will prob run the VIN just to make sure it is not stolen. You could prob get away with not doing it but if your car was ever stolen it could become an issue.

the only issue you will get into if its an import and you didnt get it imported properly. a bunch of people got into big trouble in cali for this.

There are legality issues simply for the fact that the conversion requires tampering with a vehicles VIN. When you convert you are removing both the dash VIN tag and the firewall stamp from the base car and adding VINs from another. The state wants to make sure none of the parts were stolen, it is no different then repairing a totaled car using another car's parts. It is possible to not get the work inspected but it could cause problems done the line, most likely won't, but could.

all you have to do is carefully drill off your vin from YOUR dash and then rivet it onto the rhd dash so the vin numbers still match to your car and your title... its just an interior piece... DO NOT TRY TO CUT AND WELD ON THE FIREWALL VIN NUMBER!!! thats just asking for trouble....
