steering wheel wobble?

Post by DC_T »

Whats going on everyone. I noticed this problem Saturday night (after I saw Stomp at the Fox, which was freakin amazing). On my way home, i noticed that my steering wheel was wobbling left to right probably about an inch and a half to 2 inches both ways, and my car was pulling to the right. It's not too noticeable on the highway, but under 20 its very noticeable. Drove the car today, and its really pulling hard right now. Anybody ever had a problem like this? I drove through some snow pulling into a parking spot, but i can't imagine that it would have bent something. I did have Dobbs put a new wheels stud in about 2 weeks ago, but i didn't notice the problem till Sat. Any suggestions?

rotate your front tires left to right and see if the pull changes.
if it does not change the problem lies in the suspension.
if the pull changes with the rotate you have a bad tire.

I work at dobbs, up front..call me at work if you have any questions. I will be here until 5:30, my name is Rick and the number to my store is 314-962-9891

i pulled the wheel off and didn't see any un-even tire wear or anything and the weight is still on the tire. I looked at the suspension and didn't see anything that looked bent, but its hard to tell on stuff like that. i'll rotate the tires and see what happens.

Thanks Rick. I switched the right and left front tires and the pull changed to the left front, so it was my tires. I just threw my LS mesh wheels on there for now and it fixed the problem. What is wrong w/ the tire that would make it do that? I guess the solution would be to just replace the tire, just wondering why it would cause that problem.

my hatch did this when I first got it and the way I fixed it was I replaced the torn CV boot and axle on the driverside. plus I rotated the front tires to the back and it stopped.

bad belt, defect, tread seperation, etc..and yes..you have to replace the tire
Good Luck

EDIT: if it is a fairly new tire..take it to where you bought it and see if they will adjust it (prorate) you a new one..most manufact. will warranty a seperation or a ride disturbance up to a year or the first 25% of tread worn. Try to get the store to go through the manufact. first, if they won't do anything see if the store will compensate you. If they care about retaining a customer, they will surely make some kind of effort.
