Flat / Satin paint

T-Rock;104483 wrote:anybody can paint a car its not that hard you just have to practice a lil bit and it also helps to have the right tools, as far as a rookie painting goes, a flat color would be the easiest. Now metallics and pearls is where experience comes in hand to get the metallics to lay down properly. If you need any help or questions about specific things just shoot me a pm id be glad to help out.

For real automotive grade paint it would probably cost about 150-200 for 2 quarts of DuPont Hot Rod Black with activators and reducers and 2 quarts of nason sealer, tape and plastic. You would have to buy a cheap paint gun for around 50 and borrow some ones air compressor unless you already have one. All that would be left is some mixing cups, strainers, some 320p grit sandpaper, red scotchbrite and blend prep(this is a sanding paste which cleans and abraids the surface for proper paint adhesion) so all in all it would probably cost about 300-350 in total and you would have the tools to be able to paint another car some other day.

Prepping is all fairly simple, it just requires a fair amount of time and patience. If you end up trying to prep/paint your car in a day, you probably won't have a very good turn-out on your paint. As far as satin/flat, I wouldn't know but I do know my girlfriend and I spent about two weeks on and off prepping her Prelude and it ended up turning out great with some minor sanding between coats. Just don't rush into it and you'll be happy you did when the paint dries.

So, Tommy, what is this DD you're talking about because I didn't know you had anything other than the TL? You're not painting Meg's car, are you?
Ribs. I had ribs for lunch, that's why I'm doing this.

i rattlecanned the whole front end and the rear bumper and sideskirts on my hatch last fall, didn't want to have the car painted before winter and didn't want to drive around with primer, it's holding up pretty good, I used a lot of paint though, used M3 body prep block from autozone to prep the body panels, then a few coats of primer, then a few coats of paint, and a few coats of clear, from a distance can't even tell the difference.
