In his third career final round appearance, Scott Leonard finally claimed an overdue victory in the 2008 Doc’s Harley-Davidson Street Bike Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Although he had qualified for seven events in the past two seasons, Leonard had not made it to the championship round since the October 5th, 2007, SBSS race but claimed his first Doc’s trophy exactly one year since his last chance to earn one.
Leonard secured his first pole qualifying position, as well, when the Glen Carbon, Illinois, rider took his 2003 Suzuki Hayabusa to a pass of 9.17 seconds at 153.51 miles per hour in the SBSS “suicide qualifying” session, (which allows all entries only one official qualifying attempt to make the field), to lead an all-Suzuki field. Interestingly, a first-time winner was guaranteed in the event since none of the top four riders had ever won an SBSS meet. In fact, third qualifier Evan Holland and fourth qualifier Joe Jordan had never been to a final round!
In the opening round of eliminations, Leonard proved the consistency of his Gatlin Racing ‘Busa with a 9.17/149.08, (only two thousandths of a second slower than his qualifying effort), over the heartbreaking foul start by only three thousandths of a second from Jordan’s Gatlin-backed ‘01 Suzuki GSX1000R on a career-best 9.37 at 144.09. In the other half of the semi-finals, Holland’s ’03 GSX1000R drove around the holeshot of September 24th SBSS runner-up Bruce Burgett’s QuickTime Motorsports/Street Bikes Plus/ASC ‘99 Hayabusa to win in a 9.38/140.34 to 9.45/146.70 battle. Incredibly, Holland won his race with Burgett by only twenty-eight thousandths of a second at the finish line, (5.87 feet), while even the match between Leonard and Jordan was separated by only twenty-six thousandths, (5.85 feet)!
The championship dash was Holland’s first and, seizing the opportunity, he strapped a huge two-tenths of a second holeshot on Leonard and carried the advantage to half-track. Indeed, Holland’s MCP Racing/S&E Enterprise GSX1000R was still ahead by 4.24 feet at the thousand-feet mark. In the final three hundred feet, however, Leonard squeezed the fastest speed of the event, 153.53 mph, from his ‘Busa to beat Holland to the stripe by fifty-two thousandths of a second, (11.84 feet), in a 9.35 to 9.59 battle. Although there is still one event remaining on the 2008 GIR SBSS schedule, it will be hard to produce closer racing than what was witnessed in the penultimate event of the season!
