Problem with factory head unit.

Post by ChrisD_EJ8 »

When I bought my civic someone had wired in a kenwood cd player without using the plugnplay attachments to wire it. The factory radio is still wired in behind my cupholder also. I'm not sure why but if i take one of the wires off of the factory unit, it cuts out the sound to my aftermarket radio, and the power door locks wont work. Is there any way of illiminating the factory unit and wiring this correctly?

It's a 98 civic ex.

Well, it sounds like someone wired it up wrong with it cutting out your kenwood deck. As far as the keyless entry goes, the factory radio must stay in the car in order for your factory keyless to work as it runs through that radio.

The reason why they did that is because you have a 98 civic. There is an issue with installing an aftermarket headunit up. You remove the stock headunit from the car without certain things, and you loose the ability to use the dome light and the keyless/security entry. Not just door locks. For some reason, Honda built those two things to work with the radio.

There were two ways to have an aftermarket headunit in the 96-98 civics and keep using the keyless/security and dome light.

1) Relocate and hide the stock radio and keep certain wires attached to it to fool the car its still there working. Or,

2) I believe they make a harness that allows it all to work withot the factory unit hidden. Not 100% sure.

Sounds like the person that had it before you did it using option 1. Website for added info if needed. http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/Ho ... 466013.pdf
