Large exaust size~> performance drop. how much?

Post by Lotek »

So say i were to replace my exaust pipeing/muffler etc, but sicne i plan on boosting it, i would need to get a larger ID. how detrimental to my car's current d16y8 w/o FI would running too large of an exaust be?

p.s. i already have a horrible leak so it couldnt be much worse :P

also, whats the ideal size for a boosted D, i cant remember off my head and am blind to the search button :P

i saw that, but im asking if i need to wait till i have the turbo for the larger exaust.

im trying to draw up a game plan for turboing my car, and im trying to get all the suplimental items changed first. breaks, clutch, axels, exaust, syncros(mabye) etc. so its all safe and ready to go the second she is tuned.

2.5in is all you will really need. for an unbuild n/a set-up 2.25 is better, but 2.5 won't be all that terrible for you. you will notice a lack of torque down low, but should be slightly more fun on the highway...

I would say go for it, 2.5 all the way back with maybe a glaspack and a resonator to muffle the sound, that way its not annoying when n/a and flows good when you get a turbo

I had a stock cat, stock resonator, 2.25" tubing and a 2.5" in/outlet 12" long glasspack on mine when na and it sounded good. mellow enough that it didnt sound like rice but still screamed in high rpms, plus when i switched to boost it already was free flowing enough to keep it the way it was (minus the cat). if you're worried about it being to loud still, put a longer glasspack on there :dunno:
