wheel weight questions

Post by Sleepy Civic DX »

I need to pick your brains for a moment.
I currently run ro_ja 17inch track light wheel that weigh in close to 17 lbs a wheel. They are a discontinued wheel that I picked up for $50 a wheel and I have eight of them (4 on car, a full size spare, two for track use, and one that is bent up). They are 17inch and they are ricer white, Other than the wheels and the exhaust my car looks stock. I run them because they perform very well and they hold up well to pot holes. But I HATE them because they are white.
In an attempt to make my car look more stock I picked up some 14inch steelies from someone on this forum. My question is this, how much will I hurt my performance by putting on the steel wheels? Does anyone know how much a 14inch steelie weighs? I guess I can take my car back to the dyno and see how much it hurts, but before I drive to grey summit to do that, I was hoping someone on here had some first hand experience
If they hurt to bad I will put some winter tires on them and delegate them to snow duty

if they dont work for you i have a set of stock acura 14" alluminum wheels, they are slightly wider to fit more high performance tires but are still stock looking. I bought them to use for track day because i too have some heavy 17s but never got them tires.

I think I am going to put them on, I have a vector (like a g-tech) hard wired into my car, I am going to do a base run with my ro_jas on, just to get a bassis for comparison then tommorrow I will do the same run with the steelies and see if it is drasticly different. I know the vector isnt one hundred percent accurate, but it will get me a solid number to compare against the steel wheels.

You will definitely be fast with steelies. They have a smaller tire o.d. and width, 17's are taller, wider and heavier.
I had a swapped eg hatch with 17's. Sold the 17's and rode 14 in steels. It unlocked hella horsepower on the ass-dyno. Had better gas mpg too. If you are getting into performance, trade the 17's for 15's. Just a thought.

Steelies will help out in the quarter mile, but like budget said get you some old alloys or something there a tad bit lighter then steelies and can fit a little wider tire but also keep a stock look.
