olds alero issue

Post by d16ej1 »

I just fixed that problem on my girlfriends car, the ticking sound would come on and off whenever it felt like. The actual sound you hear comes from hazard relay switch right above the radio. But that's not the actual problem. I know this cause I took it apart and brought a new one (60 bucks at the dealer only) and when I put it in, it did the same thing. Oh, and there are no refunds on electrical parts, so that really pissed me off. But anyway, the problem is in the steering column. But it's very simple to fix. Just take off 3 screws on the bottom of the column, undo the plastic cover, snaps off with a little nug, but DO NOT remove the bottom cover, it's a reall pain in the a** to put back on. Once you remove the top, there is a black plactic case where the wiper and signal handle go into, it's all one piece. Unplug the connectors to it (3), the screw on top off of it, and pull it out. Take it inside, put iton the table, and unscrew the little screw that hold it together. Just be carefull you don't loose any of them. The middle connector is what controls the signal light noise, (if you jiggle it around before you take it off, it'll make that ticking sound like crazy, mines did), but gently open it a little and see if it has black dirty stuff on the copper. I say open it a little cause there is spring in the middle if the box, and when I did it, i didn't open it all the way, mainly to avoid releasing the spring. But get a napkin and wipe it clean then apply electrical grease to them. Close it with like 2 or three screw and go back in the car and plug in the middle connector and jiggle it around and see it still does it, hers stopped completely. Then put it back together. If you have any questions just let me know.
