electric inline pump

Post by MaSSaCrE »

This was a suggestion made by my dad that he has not did in many years but on his old shelby gt500 he said he ran an inline fuel pump with an eletric pump and was suggesting that I try it if it was possible with my car and just leave the fuel pump thats already in use where it is that way i dont have to drop the rear end, tank, flush out, etc.

Any help on if it would work?

An inline pump could work depending on the condition of your old pump/sock. If your old setup is cloged causing the low pressure issue then it might not help. If not just find a good aftermarket carb pump and regulator.

Just went and bought a 150 dollar holley 110gph 14psi of fuel fuel pump& regulator. Plan on buying it on within the next couple days.

Question is I was wondering what would be a good spot to locate an inline pump. I mean it could go anywhere but yeah...

Is this for your TBI application? If so, a Holley blue or red WILL NOT work. Trust me, been there, done that. Your engine will sound like a cammed up mofo at idle but it will fall on its face like it's out of gas when you give it throttle. Even though you have the potential for pressure, TBI engines need VOLUME and the Holley vane pumps just can not do the job. Take it back. I know it pains you to pull your tank but that's the right way to fix this. If you are lazy, you can cut an access panel out and get to the pump from inside.

Yeah its a holley blue with regulator.....Reasoning for an inline pump is because im not even positive that its a bad fuel pump im testing waters and not wasting my time dropping the rear end and changing if its not the problem...

what fuel pump would you suggest for running an inline. I mean if the inline fixes it then of course im dropping the rear end and doing it the right way.

Using that type of pump won't fix it. They just don't work in fuel injected apps. I'd check your fuel pressure. See what it is with the car running. PUt it in gear and hold the brake and gas it. If the fuel pressure drops, there's your problem. If it stays the same or goes up slightly, you are probably OK. You can also find a soft line on your return side and use a pair of hose pliers to slightly crimp the hose where the fuel pressure rises a few PSI. If the car runs better, you have a regulator or possibly a fuel pump issue.

Have you checked the timing? You do realize that the distributor also controls when the injectors fire, right?

Thanks ryan...I assumed since it was low pressure, it was using the same volume as a carb. Crazy chevy stuff....

Yes i am well familiar with the distributor deal.

The car runs at 7psi and when the key is turned it drops to 1-2. The car cant stay running to flutter the gas and see if it changes at all the only way it stays running is if gas is poured in the tb.

Dizzy was my next fix if the fuel pump was not it.Fuel pump is cheaper and seems to be a well known problem so thats going first then replacement of the dizzy.

Hot wire the fuel pump. There is a prime wire that you can hook up that will force the pump to run the whole time. It's right by the relay. Hot wire that and try to start the car. Tell me if it starts.
