Quick swap (nothing crazy)

Post by RyanA »

Well, we started around noon today on the car. Drove the car in the shop, pulled engine/trans then pulled trans off of that swap to put on new engine. Changed out wiring harnesses, got rid of some jank wiring, cleaned up engine compartment (had about 200,000 miles of accumulation on the crossmember), and got everything back in. I probably spent over an hour just getting the engine compartment halfway decent. We quit about 7:30 tonight.

Nothing crazy, bone stock rebuilt LS with a B16 1-4, LS 5th LSD trans. Stripped and re-wrinkle coated the VC, painted the heat shield, repainted brackets, and a few other small things.

A few pics:

Do work son! Looks good.

A little faster than my 3 day LS for LS swap (first timer).

Should I be a dick and point out every little thing that doesn't look like OE original, like you? No, I won't.

Good work. That was a fast turn around.

Thanks for the comments/compliments.

Hell, I'm always up for some constructive criticism. Yes, I know there are things that are not "factory correct" on the swap/car. Here are a few things that are not "quite right". Feel free to point out anything you think should have been done different. I'm always looking for ways to make my next swap better/cleaner and more quickly done.

1. Stickers still on rad hoses (he wanted them there so he would have the part number on the hose if it ever failed)
2. Incorrect bolt for PS pump tensioner (should have been a wing headed bolt, not a regular 10 mm one)
3. Exhaust manifold heat shield is the wrong color. I also intended on shooting some VHT black exhaust paint on it but accidentally grabbed the wrinkle coat. I guess this will be the test as to how much heat the wrinkle coat will take...
4. Valve cover is a little more gray than the Honda black wrinkle. Wrinkle pattern is pretty close to right but the color looks a little "dry"
5. Home made spark plug wire looms don't looks anywhere close to as good as the factory ones.
6. Battery terminals suck. I gave him all kinds of crap about them...
7. Rust below master cylinder on booster cylinder
8. Bolts on exhaust heat shield are incorrect. They should be a rust color. I put some zinc coated ones there since they look better (IMHO of course).
9. Distributor cap is gray instead of correct black color.
10. 2 worm drive hose clamps on the upper radiator hose (every other clamp is correct)
11. Short ram looks a bit funky. However, his scoop directs air towards it and his passenger inner fender is MIA so he gets all kind of moisture thrown through that hole.
12. Fuel filter is a gold color instead of correct black.

Here's a closeup of the engine compartment for everyone to nit pick. This is not a show car, it's a daily driver. He drives to STL and KC on a regular basis and just wanted something to get 40 mpg again. He's going to STL on Thursday and KC this weekend so it should get some good break in miles...

Yeah, went in a 95 Civic LX. Hell, he got low/mid 40's on the highway when the stock b16 with the LS 5th was in it. I am pretty sure if he drives nice he'll get upper 30's or maybe 40. Keep in mind the car is lighter than an Integra. My wife got 37 in our old 96 LS driving to Montana years ago.

His head was WAAAAAAY too big on his fresh B16. He was tired of no torque. This way, if he decides to go VTEC (or turbo) he'll have a better foundation.

Yes, people call him scoop. If you meet him, and he's driving his car, you'll understand why.
