Well, fixed gears have been around since the 1800's, so its not like its a new thing to do, yet to most it is a trendy thing, or hip thing.
Here are some words from a bike forumm I belong to. I highlighted in bold the main reasons people ride fixed, and the main reason I rided fixed. But with some of the riders you see these days, (also known as hipsters) who ride thier fixies to do tricks, or trick their fixies out with neon colors or whatever, they are being seen more and more, than your average fixed gear rider
If you're looking for a bit of history about track bikes it all started in the late 1800's. Track racing became huge here in America throughout the early 1900's and began to die off around the middle / third quarter of the century (American track racing still exists today but to a much lesser degree, however most forms of competitive cycling remain extremely popular in Europe and Asia).
Around the same time bike messengers in major metropolitan areas began to use track bikes for their daily riding as they were fast, light, easy to maintain, and messengers really have little need for gears or braking mechanisms as most rides are high speed sprints through city streets. Prior to this most bike messengers used much heavier cargo bikes to carry their loads.
In the mid 1990's, emulating the style of the bike messenger, "fixed gear" bikes started to become popular options for young cyclists who spent most of their time riding in urban environments. This trend has continued and grown into the full fledged "industry of cool" we know today. "Fixed Gear Fever" is a revitalization of what it means to be young and city dwelling. With it's ease of entrance and high "chic" value you can expect it to continue to grow until it eventually implodes (all things marketed that heavily eventually do) and becomes the next breakdancing and fades back into relative obscurity.

But that is pretty much the jist of it!!
