Gateway Road Course Video

Post by GTI-Guy »

know most here are more into the straight line racing, but in case curves sound interesting to you, here's a recent video from Gateway's road course

Some good in-car pursuit of a fellow Instructor driving his Porsche 944 Turbo ... what a "back to the future" blast as I, once his Student, try to catch him! He's quite fast on the banked oval - nothin' like RWD slip angle ... I'm bustin' tail to do what I can to catch up in the turns ... if you watch closely, I'll outbrake a bit and close ground in the first part of turns to then have the 944 take it back on the exit out of the turn ... yes, RWD is good for nice pivoting exits, but FWD isn't nearly the "handicap" on track as some claim ... you be the judge

Anyways, hope you find this enjoyable, and if any of you are interested in getting out to the track, lemme' know any Q's you have

Hopefully I'll seduce a few of you here and get you hooked! It really is a great hobby

Best way to learn the right line and how to keep your car balanced at speed are on street tires as they complain earlier than stickier compund "R" type tires ... that helps accelerate the learning process

For the record, in that video I'm rolling on 200 tread wear Hankooks, basically a high performance "Summer only" tire, but not R's, so don't think you need stickies to have a good time

Honestly, it's so much fun that I simply don't even bother driving fast on the street anymore ... sure, I enjoy some "spirited driving" now and then when there's not other cars around, but overall, speeding on the street os just a lame substitute for what you get to do on the track

Again, you absolutely don't need a high perf car and plenty of people show up in base Civics, Focus, Accords ... it really runs the gamut, and it doesn't exactly suck when you pass an M3 or Cayman on that second day 'cause you've paid more attention to your Instructor ;-) , worked harder than the other guy ... this won't happen in the more advanced grpups, but intially, oh yeah, it can and does happen all the time

You need to have decent amount of brake pad and tire tread, reasonably fresh brake fluid and clear out your loose objects (garage openers, radar detectors, etc) inside the cabin and trunk

The big deal is brakes obviously ... to go fast you need to stop fast! I've done it so many times, I can pretty much change a car's brakes with my eyes closed in case someone needs help prep'ing theirs for an event

Woot! I'm definitely coming out for one of these next year. Do you have any dates already? I know it's only December, but I won't be 18 until April 2, like in the other thread. Just wondering.

I'm working with the SCCA on their PDX "Precision Driving Experience" and there's some exciting news that'll give you broke student and deep in-dept graduates a more price friendly way of doing this type of event

Plus a multi-car discount for 5 or more entrants, so maybe a STL Honda PDX day is something to consider

I agree
Nascar/Oval = Left turn, left turn, left turn
Drag Racing = Wait, go, stop
Road Course = this way, that way, stop, go, up, down, etc

Don't get me wrong ... it takes plenty of testicular fortitude for that stuff, but they're just not for me as far as participating in

As mentioned, stay tuned ... April 2 is great timing for the track season - is right at the start of it!

Think we can round up 5 people here for a track day?
