New Guy w/ CRX and questions

Post by REVOisGO »

whats up. my name is Nick. i know a few of you on here, and knew about this site for a while, but never had a reason to register until now.

I bought my first car back off of my dad, a 91 crx, and im wanting to spice it up a bit.

Image

(those rims are O.Z. Fittipaldi's. they no longer are on the car because i lost the centercaps for them)

the plan is to do a motor swap, some nice drop springs (like tein s-tech) on some gr-2 shocks, and some wheels. it also needs new front fenders and hood (hail damage) and some bondo work on the roof. maybe make the interior a little nicer with some new seats, etc.

now, before you write me off like i dont know what im talking about when it comes to motor swaps and working on cars, ive been doing them for years.

if youve ever been to midnight madness and seen any of the team GET MONEY guys out there drifting, i drive the sparkly blue car with the rb25det skyline motor in it. heres a few vids we got:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KScZ5Si-pw"]YouTube- GET MONEY @ T.O. Barrel Bonanza April 25, 2010[/ame]

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL-Ef-kMDek"]YouTube- GET MONEY @ Midnight Madness[/ame]

we also have a website, www.getmoneydrift.com if you want to see more videos....

and a picture of my engine bay (this motor is coming out for a better motor, but thats besides the point)

Image

so, basically, im a RWD nissan guy who got his hands on a FWD honda, and wants to put a motor in.

i know absolutely nothing when it comes to what motor swaps guys do into crx's, so i need someone to clarify that for me. i heard the b16a2 was a good swap and that it bolts right in, but again, i have no idea.

any clarification would be nice. im not looking to spend a whole lot of money, since this is just my daily driver and i already have a race car, dont need another one.

thanks.

if its really just a daily, fuck a b16. they are fairly expensive in good shape, slow, and you have to rev the hell out of them to go anywhere. just go D16z6 and call it a day. not super fast, but plenty for what you are saying you will be using the car for.

is that a common swap in these cars? my car is an automatic as well, so i need to do a 5 speed swap on top of the actual motor swap.

best bang for your buck as far as jdm motor swaps go? or is there a motor i can can get out of something already in the states?

yes, it's a common swap. the d16z6 is the motor from the 92-95 civic EX and Si's. easily found in the states, and much cheaper than any JDM motors you will find (a B16 swap will run you $1800+, and you may still need to buy a mount kit and shift linkage to get it to bolt in the car). I've owned several b16 cars, including CRX's, and in my opinion, it's not worth the money to do that swap... the z6 has a horsepower disadvantage, but produces almost the same torque numbers (off by 2 ftlbs.), and you don't need to rev it to 8000 to hit your powerband (thus less MPG loss).... not to mention that the z6 would be a much easier swap, and at 9.2:1 compression compared to the b16's 10.2:1, it is more friendly should you get antsy and want to put a turbo on it

Very good advise, except keep in mind you will need a cable D series tranny out of a 91 and older honda.

yeah, above the rear tire on the quarter panel...honda rust spot. both sides. that picture is actually 4 years old from when it was my first car. then i sold it to my dad, and then bought it back off of him.

he hit a deer with it, and dented the front fender, and you cant tall from the pic but it has bad hail damage all over. thats why it needs new fenders, hood, roof bondo and paint. im debating on what color i want to get, but white with gold wheels would be nice.

i was looking at these:

15x7 with a +40 offset. should fit pretty well

OR these:

enkei 92's

i think the color combination would look nice. but i should really figure out my motor situation before i start gawking at wheels :P
