Ok, so I found this guy on STLSR who has a CR-X for sale for $2400 OBO. He was also looking to trade it for a four-door Civic. Here is the link to the for sale thread.
CR-X For Sale
I PM'd him and went and looked at it tonight. It has a few things that worry me about it. It has 269,000 miles on the factory D16A6. It has had a new timing belt, tensioner, and water pump put on and seems like it has had decent mantinence done to it. I drove the car for a little while and there seems to be a light ticking noise under the hood. I asked the guy about it and he said he had been driving it like that for a while (Back and forth from St. Peters to Warrenton everyday). Other things that worry me are clutch and shifter. The clutch seems to be really weak (He said he replaced it 2 years ago), and its kind of hard to shift, as in the shifter is really stiff when putting it in gear, however, it didn't seem to grind gears. I felt like I was going to break the shifter trying to down shift though. The tachometer needle jumps around, which I think is a common problem. It has a little bit of rust on the rear wheel wells close to the bumper, but it has been primered over.
So I'm not quiet sure what I should do. My Civic is in excellent condition, motor wise that is, and I don't want to buy a car that has mechanical issues. What do you guys think? Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for on CR-X's? TIA for the help.

From my personal experience, that light ticking is a sign either of a exhaust valve ready to go or; a rod wanting to come out of the crank. And the tranny having a hard/firm shifting means the syncros are worn/going out. Don't buy it, unless it's like $400.

ticking could be the valves needing to be adjusted or it low on oil. as long as the tranny didnt grind, it could be just thick oil, tight bushings, or the stablizer bar could be over tightened. i personally dont like how he wants $2400 for it and it has a stock a6 in it. i could understand $2400 if the body was perfect or if it had some kind of motor swap/turbo done to it.

Honestly I have 180k on my D16a6 and to tell ya the truth anyone I come in contact with say the same thing about em you'll never get rid of that stock honda tick lol. Mine ticks and I run the balls off it and am about to boost it, my advice listen top and bottom of the motor and feel for where its coming from but if its a tick its most likely like rickles said the lifters and mine are adjusted to the stock preference and it doesn't tick as bad but still ticks lol.

yeah, not that car... its pretty beat up and he's asking top dollar for it. It would be great for people like Mike and I if cars in that condition sold for $2400, but it shouldn't happen. I'd say he owes you some cash if you trade him, otherwise keep your 4dr.
This post comes with a guarantee: I guarantee that I don't care what you think about it.
