My new econo car...

Post by RyanA »

Well, I was browsing 2 days ago and ran across this gem. 2001 Honda Insight 5 speed. It needs a fender and bumper cover but the car drives great. This was one of those "price is right" deals so I left at 8:30 pm and got to KC at about 11:30 then drove back home and got home at 3:30. If I would not have done that, the car would have been gone before I could get there the next morning.

Anyway, here are a few pics of it. Car is somewhat dirty in pics. I'll get it cleaned up and fixed then post pics of it done. From what I have seen so far, you can get a piece called a MIMA and it will make the lifetime fuel economy go to anywhere from 80-100+ mpg. It gives you 2 joysticks and a display so you can make changes to the IMA system on the fly. I'm going to look into that and also a simple TPS smoothing circuit (about $5 in parts at Radio Shack) to help keep the car in lean burn longer.

BONUS: Looked around a little more and found a very low mile full engine/trans/ECU/IMA ECU's for $400. Went and picked them up yesterday. Now, I have a full setup for standy.

The damage. He hit an animal on the highway. Looks like it was a cat or dog by the hair hanging out of the bottom of the bumper. Not bad damage at all.

hopefully yours work outs.

my story:

I had one about 5 yrs ago. i bought it for $2k needed head gasket.

i was stuck with it for a whole year fukin with it trying to find someone to fix it. no one wanted to fuck with the insight. everyone was telling me, take it to the dealership. I guess someone died working on one. had like a million volts go through him when he hit the wrong wire going from the battery or some shit.

i do remember the seat being uncomfortable as shit. also when the battery pack goes out. its top dolla to replace.

good luck man
I love Portishead.

I knew someone would bring up the KSight. LOL. ON the getting electrocuted, as long as you know how to read, you will be fine. Any high voltage IMA wiring is covered in bright orange. As long as you pay attention, you are OK. As for the IMA battery, no top dollar. They use D cell batteries. You can either rebuild the pack yourself or you can send it off and have it refurbed for fairly reasonable anymore. From the dealer, yes, they are expensive. I'll probably try to find a low mile one on Copart that is totalled but would still have good drivetrain/IMA battery.

We'll see how it goes. Should be ordering the bumper cover and fender in the next couple days. Should have it all painted and on the car in a week or two.
