You and a few others have it right. Just make sure what happened is properly documented and get that dog taken away for everyone's sake. I wouldn't have your kid out there until this happens. No need to provoke a reaction.Waffles;294031 wrote:Call the cops and take care of things the legal way. Killing the dog in retaliation is not going to help anyone.
If it happens to get out again, make sure you take pictures. Also, if it attacks anyone again, I'd take it out but that should be a last resort really (Could end up just making the situation worse between you and it's owner). As others have stated it is NOT the dogs fault. It isn't smart enough to know what it's doing is wrong. This is ALL on the owner.
Before talking to the owner, I would consult a lawyer if you can and see what you could accomplish legally. I can assume you have a pretty good case but I don't know the extent of what you could accomplish.
Then I would go to the owner and ask to resolve this without a court case regarding medical expenses. If they are willing to discuss the matter, then I wouldn't threaten them with legal action unless they are being completely unreasonable. No need to make relations anymore tense between the two of you without cause.
I wish you luck. I would be furious just like anyone else if this happened to me, but it's important to keep perspective on the entire situation. You'll end up making it easier for yourself to get things done the right way.
