my advice, get a gaming laptop or stick with desktop.
lol great advice!!!

this is a common problem with sims 3, could be overheating...if it seems super hot then you can check your bios shut down temp, also make sure you have the laptop on something that allows free air flow.
someone also said that the computer doesn't think it is being used and shuts off so to adjust power settings so all of it is never(turn off computer, sleep mode, screen saver, etc). another person says to update the video card and then to download the ea update manager and run the updates for ea and the game.
try that stuff and see if it helps.

To add to what tony said, it wont hurt to pick up one of the cheap USB powered laptop bases with a fan or 2.

Word, and to add to what Tony and Zach said, make sure it's clean. There might me some dust in the fan that's making it overheat easier. Also, don't play it while it's sitting on the bed or something. Elevate it.

That laptop should play sims just fine.

My first thoughts too.... and if you get sick of hearing about the Sims, or it is Cock blocking you... make her play outside. Its plenty cold enough outside for that Laptop to run.

The Sims in general have had issues in the past. For the amount of graphics involved it doesnt justify having such high minimum specs. My desktop was built specifically to run Sims3 and futureproof. Now its pretty much a thing of the past.
I'd suggest finding her something else to play with (pun intended) because once you start playing the sims, it sucks you in and you play for hours and hours. Just like Skyrim.
My suggestion find her a game she enjoys and gets bored with after an hour or two lol
