If you are looking for something cheap and easy that wont make you cry when you crash the first time, check out these 2 sites:

http://www.mikeysrc.com/ (look at the diy trainer)

http://brooklynaerodrome.com/ (look at the "Towel")

I used to do the rc planes with my dad when I was younger. I built a pretty badass pink and white biplane, I think he might still have it.

Styrofoam is cheap and easy to repair. If you spend hours building a wood one only to have is smash to bits you will lose interest quickly in the hobby.

I have played with a couple ducted fan planes, but no actual jet turbines. They are a little to advanced for me.

gotchya. did you like those ducted fans or would you prefer the prop driven? do you know if there's a difference when it comes to experience between the props and ducted fans?

There isn't really much difference between the ducted fan and the normal prop unless your doing a vectored ducted fan. I have never flown a vectored one.
