Here soon i have to decide on if pursing for automotive serivce as my career what college would be best? I was wondering if anyone off here has been to either the following:

1. Ranken
2. Linn State
3. UTI
4. WyoTech
5. Other

I have had many of these schools come talk to my technical school about why I and others should attend their school. But i rather have some personal opinions and go from there, what courses did you take, how much did it really end up costing, did the school actually try and help you find a job? etc.. If anyone has been to one of those or another :rock:post up something. Be helpful and i really appericate it.

Sorry never been to one. My bro and a friend went to UTI in Chicago and my uncle went to Ranken for auto mechs. I believe with ranken you have to take generals, but get an associates degree (could be wrong). UTI was about $25k, I think Ranken was close to the same. I honestly dont think you will get a comparative advantage out of either of them. From hearing my bro and uncle talk it seems about the same.

I think Ranken takes longer though. UTI is roughly around 15 months.

Now with finding a job, my bro had international sign him on, they were going to pay for classes....but he got a dui and they dropped him.

My uncle has been a mechanic for a long time and works at a dealer close to stl.

I do remember when my bro went to UTI they always said job placement is 97% or some crap and that last commercial I heard was 80% IIRC.

For some reason when I was in high school I wanted to go to Nashville Auto Diesel College, I don't know why though.

I'm SIUC (and not going for mechanics) so I can't help you out much.

Have you thought about cost? If you went to Ranken could you live at home and save money, but I have no idea if its the best. From what I understand is that they are all close to the same.

Most mechanics I have talked to say if you go to one, take diesel classes too.

STL is a big area for diesels companies.

Yes cost is the first usually thing to cross my mind about college. I've put a lot of thought into the colleges. Looked up info etc. And going out of state would not be a issue. I mean of course my family is all in the STL but I wouldn't mind to move of state.

I have a lot of guys that work with me that graduated from Ranken... they say decent things about their program... and its a reputable school... so your nearly guaranteed a job as long as you do well and are serious about it...

I on the other hand didnt want to take general education courses... i wanted to study cars and thats it... i went to Lincoln Tech... now called Lincoln College of Technology... located in Indianapolis, IN ... and I did the Auto Service Management program... where i got my Associates Degree of Applied Science in Auto Service Management.

I completed the program in 16months... straight through...each class is one month long...4-5 days a week(8hr days)... not really any breaks in the 16 months.... good school... good program... they also offer body work programs... diesel programs... electircal programs... and high performance programs.

You also do not have to do any regulay general ed courses... unless you do the management program like i did... and there are 3 courses to complete to get your degree.. they are not hard... one called Communication and Selling... one called Personnel Management and Supervision...and the last is Computer Auto Management i think...

If you have other questions feel free to ask~

I can't speak for the tech schools, but I know I screwed up when I decided to got to Iowa. The only piece of advice I can offer you is don't just pick the first school you visit. I would recommend going to all of them talking to student and what not. You just have to think it through. no pressure lol. I'm sure no matter where you decide to go you will do well.

I can't speak for Automotive, but I did go to Ranken, I did do well. And while I haven't needed them, they check up with me and make sure I am employed. My instructors have even texted me as soon as they hear about some jobs. Either way, RANKEN lights up employers eyes in STL. At least for Information Tech.

ranken is really the only way to go but you need to think about the cost of tools too we have a 21 yo diesel mechanic at my shop that says he spent 40000 on tools. or somthing like seems far fetched. the head mechanic i know has way more. but they only get snap on one of em paid over 100 bux for a 1.5 in wrench
if somone hires you from ranken they at least know your whats that word disiplined but thats not the one i am thinking of but you know what i mean
so far behind im ahead of the pack.

Sam UTI is a joke. Period! I went and checked out the avondale campus and my buddy went there... Ranken is decent. heard good things about Wyo. But run far far away from UTI.
