I have friends in the industry already. Two of them that currently drive for Werner and they said its a great company. Werner does have a flatbed division too if I get tired of pulling dry van. I'm also going to have tanker and hazmat endorsements so if I get bored I will have some options. Also, with the lease-to-own, I think you're thinking of C.R.England because they do that lease shit and I'm not touching that company with a ten foot pole (or in this case, a 76 foot tractor/trailer).exnissanguy;274364 wrote:Been there done that man. I never did the weed or drank tho. My uncle got murdered when i was six over 300 of coke so that kinda set me straight. Just remember dont do werners lease to own. Do your required years, then gtfo. Try to get on a flatbed or lowboy division and u can start out pretty descent with a few years exp. Flatbed imo is where its at. No touch freight is for the fatasses. Power hauling here in stl hires alot and.they make 28.50 an hr and home every night. Shit our delivery semi drivers make 26an hour and dont do shit. Good luck, and it gets better......just takes time. Some people dont realize how fortunate they are to have a real family and support structure, and how much they take it for granted.

i agree with everyone saying get an education! take advantage of what you have when you have it. i work for TC in edwardsville and i LOVE my job but you have to think long term. all tho i love my job i don't want to turn wrenches for the rest of my life. so I'm going back to school to get a degree in engineering

My hats off to you sir! I always tell people that complain to remember one thing. If you are not happy with your situation "YOU" are the only one that can change it. You sir seam to be doing exactly that, and I congratulate you for that.luthoro;274361 wrote:There's a BIG difference between surviving and being comfortable. I've survived on my own for the last five-ish years, doesn't mean I didn't hate every minute of it. I worked a bunch of minimum wage jobs, for the most part I drove POSs that were on their last leg and I was constantly fixing something so they would get me to work and back. I drifted from place to place never really having a stable home. Hell, I was homeless for three months a few summers ago- I slept in my Eagle Talon, showered at truck stops, held off starvation by scamming fast food places and doing dine-and-dashes, kept gas in my car with gas-and-gos, and scavenged for cigarettes. The couple times I did try to get a stable home (two apartments) I ended up going into debt trying to hang on to them and then I lost them anyway. I have over $10k in debt at age 22 (three banks, two apartment complexes, and various misc things). I've been to the very bottom of the barrel. I still kinda am until I start this new truck driving career- my laptop and my car combined are worth more then my house. By house I mean a falling-apart 35y/o trailer with boards for windows more then glass. And I think that's what finally made me step back and say, its time for me to do something because this shit ain't working. I stopped smoking weed, I stopped going out and doing stupid illegal shit, I took a long hard look at my priorities, and now I'm finally getting to the point where I can start taking steps to get my shit straight, and get a career instead of just a job. And I will never go back to that place again. I don't regret any moment of it though, because that struggling helped make me who I am today.
So, can one survive on next to nothing? Yes. Is it comfortable? Hell no. What it takes to be comfortable depends on your saving and spending habits, and your skill set. I think I'm going to do just fine with a truck driving career. I won't ever be rich, but its definitely enough income to be comfortable and then some. I could've gone to college and actually used my intelligence to get a higher-paying job, but you know when you're little and people ask what you want to do when you grow up? One of my answers was always drive a "big truck". I was built for this.
Sorry everyone, that ended up being way more long-winded and detailed then what I intended...:hanged:
