Wentzville, MO (KTVI-FOX2Now.com)— The estranged husband of a St. Charles police officer is in jail tonight, charged with hiding a camera in the bathroom of the tattoo parlor he was managing. Bruce Hymes, 41, of Wentzville, was running the Full Moon Tattoo Studio, which his wife still owns. Many in Wentzville know Hymes simply as “Bossman.”

Employees of the shop say Hymes had technical people working on the security system, and something made them suspicious. They referred to his “reputation” as the reason for their nerves.

One employee saw what she thought was a camera in the ventilation system Wednesday night, and a second worker went in to confirm it.


“I actually took the vent off and the camera fell down.” Mel Burch told us of the moment she saw the device. “You don’t even know the feeling. Your gut hits the floor. When I first seen that, my reaction was to take a picture of it to make sure he couldn’t go and rip it out and us not prove anything and then I called the cops. And then I stayed outside the building until they got here.”

The bathroom in question is used by a variety of people according to Burch.

“This is an employee restroom, a public restroom, girls, boys. People bring their children in.,” she says. Any could be a victim, though Burch says she doesn’t know what, if anything, the camera may have been hooked to. That, she says, will be for investigators to determine.

Employees say police spent the entire night and much of Thursday in the store, searching computers, cell phones, and other things in the store looking for evidence.

Charges were filed Thursday afternoon. Hymes is looking at felony invasion of privacy counts as well as a charge of tampering with evidence. Police say he tried to dispose of the camera before they got there.

Not far away, Tad Stutsman, a former employee of Hymes, now works for a rival tattoo parlor. He says he’s not surprised by the camera allegations for a couple of reasons.

First, he says, “I just knew when I worked there that he had an extensive security system on everything.”

Stutsman also points to inappropriate interaction between “Bossman” Hymes and some clients.

“When I worked there I had several, several female clients say they would not come back to the shop because of his sexual advancements and comments that he made.”

The mother of a former client of Hymes made a similar accusation Thursday. Shannon Hopkins says two years ago her daughter had her tongue pierced at Full Moon and Hymes made what she called inappropriate comments the girl, who was just seventeen at the time.

“It was just the way that he talks to these young girls, and I knew Danielle wasn’t the first and that she wouldn’t be the last,” Hopkins said outside the shop Thursday.

Meanwhile employees are just trying to regroup. They have painted an “under new management” sign on the window of the studio, and are quick to point out that Hymes behavior shouldn’t reflect on them.

“This is not a bad industry, just a bad apple,” Burch said.

Another worker, Kim Little, is still trying to get over the shock of finding out she may have been the victim of an electronic “Peeping Tom.”

“I was sick. I was sick to my stomach and I know Mel was too. It’s one of those things where you think, ‘why would someone do that? Why would someone do that?’"

Then, answering her own question, Little added, “I don’t know. I guess I ‘m too naïve to understand people that have thoughts like that because I can’t tell you a valid reason why someone would want to do something like that.”
