As stated above, cardio only burns calories while your doing it. Once you step off the bike or treadmill, you're no longer burning calories. Weight training builds muscle, and muscle is metabolically more active than fat. More muscle = more calories burned while at rest. Cardio alone can not do that, it's a fact. Cardio is important for overall health, but for the goals people are looking for on this page of the thread, weight training at a fast pace > running on a treadmill or biking. Circuit training with weights or your body weights at a moderate intensity also gives an aerobic work out.GreyTeg;291016 wrote:

Edit: also corrected by post above to be more accurate as to what I'm suggesting.
Another edit while it's on my mind: Cardio, weight lifting and exercise in general will not give miracle results without a healthy diet. Weight loss will only come when the calories coming in are less than the calories going out.

Well considering everyone is different and built different there's not universal advice that will work for everyone. He has some flaws in his statements....Waffles;291023 wrote:If you have better advise I am open to hear it since I asked the question and not Edison.
"Pure cardio by it self burns calories, but it doesn't tighten or tone or build muscle and you ONLY burn calories during said activity"
1. Pure cardio burns calories which in turn burns fat. That IS called toning your body.
2. It doesn't build muscle. That doesn't even need an explanation, yes it does.
3. You only burn calories during said activity. When doing cardio, heart rate controls fat loss, keep your heart rate up. When you get done running a mile your heart rate is still up. So even when your walking out of the gym and driving home, your heart rate is still up just like it was on the treadmill.
If you add cardio regularly then your resting metabolic rate never goes down to where it was before you starting adding cardio into your routine. You still burn calories even on a day off.
I would advise you to put more cardio into your exercise routine. When your not doing that, focus on workouts that train your core. Add ab workouts three times a week. Exercise hard, eat right and get a good nights sleep and you most likely will see changes. (Most likely because like I've said not one set thing works for everyone.)

Not totally. Every body is predetermined as to where it will go for it's energy reserves. Some bodies go straight to body fat to convert to energy, some people's use each calorie consumed for it's energy and puts very little into fat. Also, each body is predetermined as to what fat stores to use; stomach, hips, chest etc etcGreyTeg;291025 wrote:1. Pure cardio burns calories which in turn burns fat. That IS called toning your body.
It builds LEG muscle. Since Zach (and he will correct me if I'm wrong) stated he was content with his lower body development (since he's already running) and wanted upper body + fat burning advice, why would I prescribe MORE "traditional" cardio? That won't develop his chest, back or arms and shoulders.2. It doesn't build muscle. That doesn't even need an explanation, yes it does.
Yes, until your heart rate returns to it's normal resting rate after about ten minutes or so.3. You only burn calories during said activity. When doing cardio, heart rate controls fat loss, keep your heart rate up. When you get done running a mile your heart rate is still up. So even when your walking out of the gym and driving home, your heart rate is still up just like it was on the treadmill.
This I agree with.Exercise hard, eat right and get a good nights sleep and you most likely will see changes. (Most likely because like I've said not one set thing works for everyone.)
The routine I recommended, and a recommendation is all it is, combines upper body and core work along with explosive cardio work in one without the need for equipment as Zach requested. I'm not a doctor or certified trainer, just my suggestions based on HIS request.
Tony simpliefied it best really. And in the end it comes down to "eat less, exercise more" so there are multiple paths to the same end.
