The city of St. Louis has been putting on an international design competition to redesign the arch grounds. They selected close to 20 teams at the beginning of the year, each of which were made up of 3 or 4 architectural and engineering firms, to redesign the area stretching between the Old Court House in downtown to across the river in East St. Louis. About 3 months ago they narrowed the teams down to 5 finalists for the project and had them put together their final design proposals. Today they released those designs to the public. The winning design will be chosen next month with construction starting soon afterwards. Their goal is to have it done by 2015, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the arch.

Weiss Manfredi and Behnish seemed to put forth the most effort and actual care. The Behnish team has a lot of St. Louis professors and architects working on it, but Weiss Manfredi has done some really nice work in the past and has my vote.

Agreed, out of the 5 shown, those 2 were my favorites. I think the Bike / walking path on the old bridge is the best idea no matter what. Keeping a part of history and using what we have to help reduce cost as well.bemberg2;242058 wrote:Weiss Manfredi and Behnish seemed to put forth the most effort and actual care. The amphitheater is awesome that they displayed over on the "East Side" and I love how they plan to incorporate a walking path / trail to bring Soulard into the downtown area by making it easier to get to. Nothing like making a day of St. Pats or Mardi Gras and then walking to the riverfront to enjoy the river front.
