buying a helmet...

Post by DC_T »

So i'm going to stop being a panzy and get my car(s) on the track, but I need a helmet. I'm planning to do some autox and maybe get into some hpde. Reading online it seems like a snell sa2005 helmet would be the way to go, so I could have it for a few years and not be restricted because of my helmet rating. I'm also liking the idea of having a full face helmet, so i don't take any rocks or rubber off the chin. I'm hoping to keep the price in the $200-250 range.

What kind of helmets do you guys run with? Any brands that you've found to be better than others? Anything to look out for when buying one? And are there any local places that have a good selection in helmets?

I've found a couple out there online, but I'd really like to try a few on to see which one is comfortable before i drop $200+ on it.

thanks

Cycle World off of St Charles Rk RD in the Walmart parking lot. They have a huge selection of motorcycle helmets. Most match Snell/dot requirements for HPDE's and track days.

Me= sick :(

Shoei brands are VERY nice. Very quiet/comfortable.(around 400 for a plain color) My other helmet is an ICON. A lot cheaper (around 250) Not as quiet, but considering thats not too much of a factor. A little less comfortable than the Shoei. I have both of them, and have had NO problems with them, besides the clips breaking off on the face shield.

I have a Shoei that I love. It was expensive though. I have used Fulmer helmets in the past. You can get snell approved Fulmers, but not all are. A Fulmer saved my life.

unless your buying a helmet for a bike then there is NO need to spend more the 200.00 on a helmet and hats including a different visor.

I bought a HJC orbit three years ago when i had my bike and Ive used the same helmet for the past 2 years of drifting at MM and it works perfect, a full face helmet that will protect my noggin if anything happens.

when it comes to your helmet when being used for auto sports you just need one that is full faced and fits correctly and securely and matches the safety requirements of the sanctioning body your going to be using it in.

i bought my helmet from Donaldson's on the rock rd for like 145 with a different visor
