Any gun fanatics out there?

Post by Dabeastwthn »

I need some suggestions and pros and cons on a new 9mm or .45.
I owned a Ruger P95 9mm a few years ago and like it alot. Looking to get another finally and want some suggestions on what you guys have experience with. Not necessarily looking for a conceal and carry gun just a nice home protection and shooter. I like a friend of mines Springfield XD and another has a S&W SW9VE that shoots pretty good too. Looking to stay affordable...so under $600...so no Kimbers unfortunately! :(

I'm a 44, long-barrel kind of guy. I love Taurus long-barreled 44's (44 Magnum, ie their Raging Bull model). They shoot great, recoil is a lot less than you'd think. Their pricing isn't too bad, tons of knockdown power if you're looking at "home-protection" and relatively affordable. If you want to stay with a 45 or 9mm due to ammo prices etc. That's up to you, and me. I'm not a Ruger fan at all.

I'd luv to get one but ammo prices and wife may one day shoot it come in play here. You like Taurus though? I have no experience with them. I'd really want to get an H&K or a Kimber but they are out of my price range. :(

Not a true fanatic... but..

9mm less punch but higher velocity plus cheaper ammo
45 more punch lower velocity but slightly pricier ammo

The 2 guns on my current want list?

Kimber BPTEN .45
or
Para Nite Tac .45

Both are great guns. But both are out of your price range.
Though the Para is a bit pricier :wink2:

Springfields ive heard good things about.
Taurus ive heard good and bad. Though my uncle has the judge and its a neat and fairly powerful revolver!

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.
Hope this helps

Yes I own 2 slow red chick cars & 1 real car!

I really like the XD's and they're comparable to a Glock. Just never liked the way a Glock felt in my hands. And while I don't dislike 9mm in the least I'd go with a .45 if you can. If you do go with a 9 I'd suggest getting a good hollow point because they're usually pretty hot rounds. No sense in tearing up too much of the house defending it, or having a round go through a wall and hit somebody you don't want it to.

Edit: Shotgun ftw!

Ok my 2 sugestions one im going to get slammed for.

1. Hi-point 9mm or .45 Seriously i have the 9mm and i have seriously put thousands of rounds through it and have had no probs. They have night sights (other comp that is extra) No to mention the warrenty is incredable Life time no questions asked transferable warrenty(there have been stories of people running them over and sending it back and they rebuild it or give a new one.) I love mine!!!
price=====250 tops and that is with lazer site and everything.

2. Taurus millinem this gun manufature has come a long way in the past 10 years. The only thing i have found that if you have big hands I would recamend the extended clip otherwise your hand will get burnt or pinched by the slide.

thats just my .02

I carry a Kel Tec P32 everywhere I go, but that is a little too small for around the home protection. In terms of price and quality I have had no qualms. They have a lifetime warranty and produce two different 9mms.

One suggestion I would make is to seriously consider a wheel gun. For reliability, a wheel gun can go to hell and back. You could throw it against a wall a few times or leave it in a drawer for 10 years and it would still fire. There are a million things that can potentially go wrong with a semi-auto. I recognize this and I carry a semi-auto. There is a trade off with re-loading speed, but that is the only disadvantage.

Look into something like a Ruger LCR. It's a .38 special and runs around $500. It's a little smaller, but you could also carry it if you wanted to. Also any Smith & Wesson, even used, is a high quality gun. The J-Frame and specifically the Air Weights they made were awesome.

If you go shopping check out Mid America Arms on Gravois. Hands down it is my favorite place in St. Louis.

No bashing on the Hi-point here. One of my first purchases was a Phoenix Arms HP25. I went to 3 gun shops trying to get one and the first two said they wouldn't even bother getting one for me. Thank you Kellers. But I had nothing but bad luck with the Millenium. Jammed constantly for me and eventually sold it at a gun show for way too cheap. Hell, the HP25 is one of two pistols I haven't sold...ever.

Taurus, I've probably put 500+ rounds through several Taurus and I love them. I don't get to shoot much anymore living in STL, but. they're one of my favorite shooting experiences. Most if not all of their barrels on the newer models are ported, leaving you with only a slight "hop" as a recoil. They make a 6.5 and an 8.5 inch barrel (give or take) as well as a snub-noze for several of the models I believe. And the 44.mag especially some of the custom rounds have some major knockdown power. Combine that with the accuracy afforded by the longer barrels, some guys use these things for close range deer-hunting. It's pretty impressive.
