POS on CL. WASTED TRIP.

Post by RyanA »

Well, I drove 440 miles yesterday to go look at a car in "Festus" but it was actually in Crystal City (yes I know they are close).

Anyway, I talked to this guy on the phone and asked what all damage the car had. He said "only bumper cover and radiator support. Frame horns are not bent, no rust, and no dents anywhere else on car". I asked if he had a clear title in hand and he said "Yes.". I got directions and headed that way. Well, 3.5 hours after I called to tell him I was leaving and verify he did, in fact, have a clear title, he called and said "man, I can't find the title. I'll just get one sent to you." Uhh. NO. I said no title in hand, no sale. He said he was sure he had it at his new home in STL and to keep coming as he'd find it. I get there and here is what I found:

Passenger fender is dented to hell. He obviously used MSPaint or some photo editing program to get it out. It has probably 7 or 8 grapefruit sized dents; no way that camera angle would hide that. Passenger doors had a smooth crease that it looked like someone took a ball peen hammer and beat out from the inside. Rust on rear passenger door and rust on the rear passenger quarter. I asked him if there was any rust and he said "I think a little on the front of the front passenger fender and that's it.". Look inside. There is NO WAY IN HELL this car only has 162,000 miles. It looks more like 350-400,000 never detailed miles. It stinks terribly inside. Dirty body stains anywhere skin touched and the floor mat was worn almost completely through. Yes, through the rubber and everything. Engine compartment looked even worse. Leaks everywhere, corrosion everywhere (once again 350-400,000 unmaintained looking miles). Look a little closer at the frame horns and the passenger one is pointing at about a 45 degree angle down. No frame damage at all? RIGHT. Well, needless to say, the guy lied multiple times and didn't have a title even if we would have agreed on a $200 price. LOL.

Anyway, here's the ad. Any CL regulars please flag this POS every time you see him post it up for sale. Do not waste your time to even drive an look at it (unless you live in Herculaneum, Festus, or Crystal City). I wasted 8 hours of my time and about $80 worth of gas to look at what, quite possibly, is the dirtiest Civic I have ever seen...

The ad does say "best offer at the end of the day." Offer $200 and then make the money back with the motor and other stuff.

Damn, sorry you made the trip. I live in Festus, right next to CC. I would of checked it out for you, before you made the trip.

LOL. I was too mad to take pics. He wanted $2000 but said he'd take 800 (without wheels, they were trashed anyway) for the car after he figured out he did not have a title. NOT worth 800. Car was VERY rough.

Yes, Mike, I agree. NO MORE long drives to get cars. I guess I hope that other people are honest when they sell a car; it does not appear to be that way for about 96 out of every 100 CL ads. My last "good deal" on CL was the Accord wagon. That guy was as honest as they come.

yeah, a buddy of mine went to look at that car too.

long drives don't always turn out bad. I just picked up a car in Taos the other day!
