Can't title my car!

Post by Edison Carasio »

Well I'm screwed. The person who gave me my 89 Accord never titled the car in the state I live in, so they have to title it before I can. I could fill out the documents for them, but I need their Social Security number and driver's license number. What can I do? I'm stuck with this car sitting in front of my house. Plates expire next week, and I can't get new ones. Once they expire, police will tow it. I called them (they moved to another state) but I can't get ahold of them.

is the title in their name? it shouldn't matter what state the title is in. If I buy a car from KY I don't have to get the KY seller to title the car in MO first...

You should be able to title this car no problem as long as the current title is signed by the listed owner.

Is there something else wrong with the title?

I agree with the above, never heard of the seller needing to retitle the car in the buyer's state. Who told you this? Either they or your understanding is incorrecto.

Can't title my car!

I went to the DMV today and they said that. what happened is on Monday, my freind had her ex BF sign the title over to here so she could drive the car to Alabama (moving there), then it turns out the cars brakes and clutch won't make it. So she gave the car to me later that night, and is now in Alabama (her dad drover her). On the MO title, only a registered dealer or something could reassign it like that. So she would have title it, and reassign THAT title to me.

I got ahold of her and I'm sending her the paperwork to title it, and then i have to take that back to the DMV and title it in my name. Blech. Gonna cost me an extra $90.

There is an inspection that you get at the shops specially for out of state titled cars. I have to do the same thing to my 525i bmw. It cost cheaper then normal inspections but has to be done. It is suppose to be done the second the car hits a different state but its not a huge deal.

Look into it some more and you will get the exact name and see what im talking about. I went through same thing since ive had my bmw for years and not titled in missouri in my name since we werent driving and forgot about it.

I had the same trouble with a vehicle I purchased from a dealer. My vehicle was orig. titled in Michigan, driven by the company that owns it to Kansas City and sold to the dealer and then to me with out being titled. The DMV had a problem cause it was sold twice with out being titled. (looks like it was stolen?) The dealers title person cleared it up for me.

If you want to make it easy, just add your name to the title. IE: Buyer: Alabama Girl and your name. Get a title application and fill it out. Have the "Send to" area filled out with your current information. You'll get the title and it will be in her and your name. You can have her sign it whenever you see her and just don't sign your name on the back until you are ready to sell the car.

I agree with RyanA, but also I know in IL you can goto the DMV and get some sort of piece of paper saying that you didnt sell to that buyer, but you sold to this buyer, and you put the name in there. The same goes with the date on the title. I have done both of those before.

I sent the person in Alabama the title work today and they are sending it back to me, so I should have it titled, plated and insured by next week. Then I have to start repairing the clutch, brake master cylinder and upper control arm on the driver side. Any one that can help with that work, PM me. Beer and money for labor will be your reward.
