Pontiac is Dead.

According to this report, insiders are saying that the death of the Pontiac brand will be announced next week.

I guess re-badging Chevys just doesn't cut it anymore.

Yep. What is the Chevy version of the GTO or G8 anyway? How about the Solstice or Grand Prix? Not too familiar with GM; that's why I ask.

Notice how they say the Pontiac plant will be closed for 7 weeks then reopen? Wonder what's happening there....

The chevy version of the GTO was the corvette and the only thing it really shared was the motor, it was its own car. The solstice only had the saturn sky and the grand prix was the pontiac version of the impala.

I dont really see anything huge happening, their G8 was their super car. The only thing really huge coming out to rival the zr1 and the ctsv was the g8 firehawk which imo isnt that impressive. its just a cheaper (price and physically) version of the ctsv, 4 door supercharged v8, only its slower. Pontiac had a good run but nobody wants to buy sportier versions of family sedans anymore. its all about hybrids nowadays.

Not all Pontiacs are rebadged Chevys, but cars such as the G3 and G5 are. The GTO and the G8 was/is a rebadged Holden. The Solstice is the same as a Saturn or Opel depending on the market. The Grand Prix shared a platform with 3 Buicks and 2 Chevys.

The whole brand-engineering concept only worked when they controlled a huge share of the market.

All this time, I thought that a GTO was pretty much just the Pontiac replacement for the Firebird/TA. Guess I never realized it was actually a Corvette in Pontiac clothing. Cool!

I never said anything about a Corvette.

In response to your comment, the Corvette and GTO share a LS engine. They have completely different platforms.
