Unlocking Smartphones

Don't pay extra to get an unlocked version of the phone, do it yourself.
Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/, it's a forum for phone geeks and there's instructions about how to unlock most smartphones, new ROMs, software etc.
I've unlocked and reflashed T-Mobile Dash and also ATT Tilt to use with T-Mobile. Throught that forum I've even learned how to get TomTom GPS on my phone without paying for it! lol Flashing ROMs is pretty easy, just follow instructions and it should work.
And if you still don't want to Flash a Rom yourself, I can do it for a case of beer lol

T-mobile will unlock them for free if you tell them your going out of the country. Thats what they did for me.

So what is the advantage of unlocking the T-Mobile Dash as well as reflashing it?

More features and better performance. I am running WM6.1 on my dash right now. Next time you see me ask me to show you.

Also unlocking just about any phone is free after 6months. Just call up T-mobile(or whoever your carer is) and tell them you are traveling out of the country. With an HTc phone it will take about a week, but will be free.
