Unnecessary.

If anyone doesn't make the kind of money they think they should make, what is stopping them from going into a profession where they can make what they think is right?

You aren't stuck with an occupation.

I think I should get paid more for what I do... but then I realize that no one is forcing me to do what I do. I like what I do and when I look around, it's the best I 'think' I can do at the moment. I'm not going to join the union and have them force the company that has given me so much to give me more money/benefits. Gotta go with the flow - it'll pay off later, versus trying to make it pay off now and getting canned.

Just my opinion. Feel free to hate it.

Like I said I was in the Painters union for 7yrs or so. Out of those 7yrs I was laid off 2yrs plus. How shitty is that? I was not the only one. More than half of the Painters union was laid off. I don't know the exact number of members at that time, but its a significant number. No one was hiring, heard the same BS everytime. Called the hall, went to the hall looking for work. Everytime they said, we will put you on the list, we will give you a call if something comes up. I called everyday, called multiple companys a day. Still nothing. So I had enough, got out. Now I work everyday, like I said I make a lot less, but I work everyday. I pay my benefits. And most of all, happy with what I do.

My experience with the union is this. They are good to you if you are working, that is obvious. But its been proven and I totally hate this, if you are not a family member or stuck up so far the boss's ass, then you are getting laid off. I was a really good painter, fast, reliable, knew my stuff. Still got laid off before the ones that were late always, drunks, druggies, etc. So when you are laid off, the union does not do that much for you. At least my union was like that. And you have to fend for yourself.

you all have your points, except its pat. construction is up and down, it comes and goes. but doesnt mean you should screw everyone by writin it off. this is like talkin to a brick wall, cause ive agreed that the people who run the locals and internationals are twisted but... I DONT GIVE A DAMN, cause its not about them, it about keeping the working class alive. no no one forces me to do what i do, but its a good honest living and i get to be outside almost all year. your all complaining about the companies youve worked for so your layed off ahh yeah thats the nature of the trade. has nothing to do with a good paying job thats made safer. yeah havent even touched on the safe aspect of it. do i agree with the bullshit between the trades no, we fight more with each other then we spend fighting for our selfs as a hole. cause at the end of it all were all tryin to do the same thing... survive!!!

and far as the painters go. iv never seen or heard nothing but bad things about there locals. its shitty but im no painter. and if u dont like it, any job u have the choice to go non union. but u better believe that unions effect how ur treated and paid. why change something that doesnt need to be changed or fixed. everything has faults but when it comes down to it every little bit helps.

My opinion, fuck unions. Honestly. Unions are scams. They protect lazy, useless employees and it's something old lazy guys use to keep young, hungry hard working guys out of well paying labor jobs.

Unions ruin companies and communities when they start keeping young hard workers out and old lazy fucks in. Then when they negotiate the pay so high for guys who don't produce any work, the company is forced to lay off and go out of business and then everyone wonders why the economy sucks.

I was previously a union worker and never again unless they change and shape up and stop promoting laziness and privelage based on "seniority". Seniority itself is a fucking joke for the most part.

Asked for opinions then get pissed off when someones opinion does not match yours.
