Not a bad location at all. There is Phine Designs right down the street as well as redline performance motorsports in the same connected building. Where I work at we do carry pretty much every coupler and clamp you can think of, as well as all piping for any thing you need welded up. But we don't have an advertised name out there really, just word of mouth.
I think it would be a great idea for a shop to open to carry the odds and ends stuff, as well as all the common items, especially closer to home for me.
yeah, great Idea...have a performance shop. You'll get to compete with all the internet whore pricing and still have to charge sales tax to your customers (making you more expensive). Then, no matter what parts you have in stock, it won't be just exactly the right one and you'll have to order it in anyway. Folks say they'd like to have a local place to buy from, but when it comes down to it price will win out for a lot of folks (not everybody). The only way I see it possible to make a decent dollar selling parts is if you get the money for installing them, 'course everyone thinks they're a master mechanic once they get their first K&N drop-in successfully installed. So your customers may someday decide they don't need you for labor.
Unless you can buyin at the WD level with parts manufacturers you will be working on about a 12% margin (on average). Some parts (the ones with MAP guidelines) will at least give you an opportunity for 20-50% margin, but will not guarantee you get it. Now factor in insurance, credit card processing fees, rent, taxes, licenses, interest (if you have to borrow any money for startup), shrinkage, payroll (if you have employees), and other general operating costs and it takes a lot of product moving through to earn yourself a paycheck... I hope you have deep pockets or no bills.
However, I hope your endeavor is successful.

pricing for comparable parts are not too far off from stores v internet.. its the fucking retards that say " psh i can buy an SRI off ebay for $25 instead of this injen one for $90" ..
but my 2 cents.. simple bolt ons for commons cars, civics, tegs, 240s. decals... car care products, what ever other small things we may need (im sure there will be a learning curve) and then of course a list of all you can order.
Stocking Nick Nacks is what would be most successful.

-Maybe develope your own original product thats exclusively yours.
-Wheels & Tires, get a nice mounting machine and balancer.

but the margin on that $90 injen intake is about nothing at that price. Parts manufacturers ALLOW their parts to be whored out (sometimes by the WD) which makes it difficult for a retailer to profit (which is why they are in business, right?). That's the point i'm trying to make.
