Tyler, lets just say............ A lot!! lol.

Its either a nikon or a canon. Theirs other companies that make d-slr's like olympus, sony, or fuji. But these are the two main ones. Just go to your local camera store or best buy and get a feel for each company. The main reason why I like nikon is because they use 2 dials for shutter speed and aperture, and they are built into the front and back , unlike the canons that use one and its on top.

I suggest you make an account with nikoncafe.com, im not sure what the canon forums are, but they'll help you no matter what you choose.

i was planning on going with a nikon, unless someone recommended a canon that was better. from my experience i've liked them more. im not looking to spend a whole lot, but maybe $500 or so. i'd like to get a camera, and lens or 2 as well, but idk if i'll be able to, and get a quality camera. i basically want something with a good amount of settings, time exposure, manual focus, etc.

You can actually get into it for cheaper than you'd think if you are willing to buy used to get started. I have a Nikon D70s w/ 50mm f1.8 (pending sale though) that is going for $385. So.....that's what it could cost you to get started. I see used D80's selling for 500-600 range quite a bit.

Honestly, in my opinion, a used Canon 40d would be your best buy as they sell for the 600 dollar range all the time used. I'm a Nikon guy and I can even say that. 40d has a faster fps rate than even the D90, has very good high ISO (not as good as the D90 but much better than D80), has a weather sealed metal construction body, etc.... I just never cared much for the menu and button layouts of the Canon's which is my main reason for going D90 instead of switching to a 40d.

If you want a Nikon, join on www.nikoncafe.com. You have to have a certain amount of posts and certain length of membership to see the For Sale section but you can find some really nice used gear on there.

I think we are at like +$40k for our company combined. This includes Camera bodies, lenses, computers, hard drives, software, membership fees to diff organizations, insurance, lights, etc.

But that only equates to 5% of our success. We are on a mission to put in 10,000 hours worth of work that we feel is necessary to be trully successful. Its all about practice, practice, practice. Always be open to new ideas. Don't shoot because you want to make money, shoot things because you are interested in them. Never feel like you know everything. I still consider my self a newb who doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

^ LOL

They had D200s on sale at bestbuy for $600. I would say if your willing to spend the money get a nice d80 body, the new ones have dropped to around $500. Then a 18-200mm VR for another $500 and your set. Its a great all-around lense, and you probably won't need a new lense for a long time after getting it. Unless you want to get serious and get sharper glass.

That was my main rig for the past 2 years, but now I like shooting wide, so fishy and sigma 10-20.

i really dont know what the different lenses are or what they do, but i do know that eventually i will be wanting a fish and wide lense, as well as a good one for all around shooting.
