That kind of security is standard on all the international airports. I had to do that same thing at Taipei on the way to/from Malaysia recently. Not a big hassle I think compared to security and customs in the US, especially in LAX. Even as a US citizen, it takes an eternity to go through immigration/customs, and baggage claim is a cluster. I feel bad for the non-US citizens and green card holders/visa holders that have to wait in an even longer line, and they take identity checks via webcam and fingerprinting.

It does take awhile. I have been in and out of the country 3 times in the last 2 months. Security just sucks, esp when stupid people can't figure out what 100ml is or that you need to put liquids in a bag. People are stupid.
