you are correct as long as i have had this all i have done is clean, mostly with a soda blaster which was really easy, but a lot of just plain work, with scrotch brights pads and balls of aluminum foil and wd40 which actually does a really good job shining up chrome. im also having to sand/polish the engine block with tiny pieces of fine sand paper where the bearings seat cause everything is so corroded, but its cleaning up nicely.mrfuzzynuggets;294887 wrote:I think something like this should go slow, put some love into it so its done right.
thanks dude, im hoping to have this running in a few months! not restored, just gone through and ready to ride.muha22752;295042 wrote:Wow, that is going to be quite a project. Can't wait to see the progress.
here is the first round of parts, doesnt look like much, but it everything to get the crank in the block. front main bearing, oiling plate, oil slingers front and rear bearing shims, woodruff keys and various oil seals and gaskets. i didnt get a rear main bearing because the one i have is in good shape, that and a new one costs $200!

the next round of parts will get the cam installed then the bottom end will just about be complete. then its on to cylinders and cylinder heads, gonna have to get the cylinders honed and install new rings. there is not really a lot to do, but its all gonna take some time.

sweet! what kind of media does he have, i might take some steel parts, the baking soda doesnt clean the steel real well? i love the look of aluminum after you hit it with the soda it cleans it up but leaves a little of the "patina", so it still has the old character as the rest of the bike.Waffles;295287 wrote:Yo, my friend said its cool if we want to go over there some time and get all the scale off the aluminum parts. cleaned the cylinder heads, this evening, made a huge mess.
for comparison, clean next to dirty.

i got them both clean now, some other covers and aluminum parts, just need to rinse them off.
